Letter from the Incoming CATA President

June 2, 2009

Dear CATA member,

I hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the start of your summer. I’m excited to share the many great things happening with the CATA.

First, we are happy to announce that Governor Ritter signed SB 26 on June 1 in Greeley at UNC! This couldn’t be a more fitting close to a most successful term as President for Chris Mathewson, and for his dedication we are MORE than grateful.  There are many members that took part in making this legislative effort a success, please read on in the newsletter as we recognize these individuals.

(FROM L TO R: Pat Karns, Jenn Dougherty, Rep. Jim Riesberg, Chad Smidt, Greg Holm, Shannon Courtney, Mark Peters, James Turk)

We have also just held the Annual Business Meeting and Symposium May 16 & 17 at Valor Christian High School. The meeting was a great success and I would like to thank the CATA BOD Chris Mathewson, Carrie Meyer, Robert Ryan, Dominic DiManna, Paul Meier, Chrystal Erickson and Kelly Brick. I’d also like to thank Allen Schroeder of Valor Christian HS, Darryl Miller, Genia Lemonedes and Chris Nagelhout for their efforts as well. It is the commitment and hard work of theses individuals that made the meeting such a success.

I would like to thank the members of the CATA for the opportunity to serve you in my new role as president. I hope to build on the remarkable leadership and accomplishments that Chris has shown us for the last six years. With a new enthusiasm brought on by a confidence that the bulk of the legislative effort was behind us, the BOD and committee chairs/members discussed some great ideas in our strategic planning meeting in May. While we need to maintain our legislative presence, we now look forward to refocusing on a host of other efforts.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me or any BOD member as we are here to serve you.

Sincerely,

Jenn Dougherty

CATA President

Special Thanks

Dominic DiManna

We would like to thank outgoing BOD member-at-large Dominic DiManna. Dominic has served 6 years in this position and contributed extended time to the CATA and legislative efforts as well. In his position as Member-at-large, he was charged with overseeing several committees that help keep the CATA moving forward. Thank You, Dominic, for your dedication to the CATA and the AT profession.

Chris Nagelhout

Special thanks to Chris Nagelhout who served the CATA as treasurer. Again, due to legislative efforts, the treasurers’ workload over the past years has been LARGE! Thank You, Chris, for your time and service to the CATA.

Thank you Chris Mathewson by Jenn Dougherty

The CATA has been extremely lucky for the last 6 years to have Chris Mathewson serve as our President. I’m pretty sure when Chris took office he had NO idea what lay ahead…LEGISLATION!

However, when the call came to get the job done, Chris tackled it head on! As I joined the CATA Legislative Action Task Force in March 2004, I had the opportunity to witness his leadership first hand. What did any of us know about legislation, not much?  As a true leader does, he did not waver but sought out the necessary resources to take us in the right direction. After each unsuccessful attempt, Chris continued to motivate us to move forward, knowing and admitting how much more difficult it was to stay enthusiastic. He carefully considered whether it was worth the continued effort, and sought feedback from the BOD and members. Chris was an all around considerate and thoughtful leader. Not to mention the time he sacrificed, time I’m sure he’d rather have spent with his family (to whom we also owe a debt of gratitude). Here we are, 5 long years later with a new Athletic Trainers Practice Act! I personally am more than grateful for his monumental dedication. …and that was just legislation! The last two years of his term, realizing that legislation was monopolizing CATA efforts, Chris rededicated focus to other areas of attention.

Chris continues to show his dedication as he will be serving us again as RMATA secretary.

The CATA BOD says a resounding THANK YOU to Chris Mathewson -- and I only hope to match the tireless commitment you have shown us.

Letter from Outgoing CATA President

May 23, 2009

Dear Colleagues and Friends

As I write this “outgoing president’s letter” I do so with an ironic heart. On one hand I am so glad to be finished with my second term as President of the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association.  I am certainly ready to do something else with my free time.  Yet I feel as if very little has been accomplished.  I would have sooooooo liked to officially have success at last with our athletic trainer legislative efforts; yet the wheels of government move VERY slow.  We have every reason to be optimistic but you just never know.

It is hard to sum up what I have learned in my six years.

·         I have learned I can be a leader, despite how I view myself; I have the ability to lead.

·         I have learned there is not an email that I don’t like  J

·         I have learned that athletic trainers are professionals on the fields and courts etc. AND we need to be professionals in the board room.

·         I have learned that leaders have the responsibility to ask “why?”

·         I have learned that I don’t take compliments well.

·         I have learned that I am married to an angel – I am in way over my head.

·         I have learned that I need to stay busy and despite all this work, I would actually go crazy without it.

·         I have learned that you can’t make everyone happy.

·         I have learned that there are only about 125 people in our association (out of 565) that are active YET the CATA serves all 565.

Most of all, I have learned that those 125 people are GREAT people who share a lot of the same values I do and it has been an honor to represent and serve them.

I would love to have a super “ask not what your country…“quote like JFK to close out this letter,   but I am not that eloquent.  What I would like, is to ask that all members (all 125 of you) who read this letter find a way to get involved with OUR profession no matter what level (committee, state or national).  The rewards FAR outweigh the costs.

Sincerely,

Chris Mathewson

Legislative Update! By Jenn Dougherty

Finally…the Governor signed SB 26 on Monday June 1, 2009! The Athletic Trainers Practice Act will be LAW! Let’s just breathe a sigh of relief and savor the moment. It has been a long time coming.

            Thank you’s

First, I like to say a RESOUNDING thanks to the CATA BOD including all of the BOD members who have served since the outset of this endeavor in 2004, Chris Mathewson, Lisa Lear, Greg Harper, Connie Larson, Carrie Haugen, Dominique DiManna, Carrie Meyer, Robert Ryan, Paul Meier, Kelly Brick, Chris Nagelhout, and Chrystal Erickson.

Next thanks to Charlie Hebeler & Suzanne Hamilton our lobbyists, Representative Jim Riesberg, Senator Suzanne Williams, Rick Ball our legal consultant, and certainly the NATA for both the intellectual and financial support. Without these experts we could not have gotten through this process.

Last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank the NUMEROUS CATA members who helped along the way from the “LATF 1 & LATF 2” and our “Legislative soldiers” groups. These individuals all took part in many different ways from making phone calls, sending letters, stuffing envelopes, fundraising event preparation to testifying at committee hearings. Every contribution counted in this effort so a personal THANK YOU to: Mark Adams, Tory Aggeler, Steve Antonopulos, Wayne Barger, Gaye Beckman, Kristin Bradley, Don Bost, Julie Campbell, Shannon Courtney, Sarah Davies, Terry DeZeeuw, Amanda Digregorio, Keith Dugger, Cindy Endicott, Derrick Fitts,  Ami Gallivan, PJ Gardner, Jim Gillen, Lori Gulmantovicz, Carrie Haag, Andrew Heinrichs, Rick Hendricks, Greg Holm, Wendy Holm, Margaret Hunt, Greg Jensen, Frances Jenkins, Pat Karns, Michael Keating, Kat Koehler, Bruce Kola, Genia Lemonedes, Jaclyn Lucas, Kristin Lundgren, Kevin Margarucci, Beth Massie, Wendy Mathewson, Jason McWilliams, Nancy McWilliams, Darryl Miller, Mark Morrissey, Chris O’Dell, Corey Oshikoya, Megan Pales, Mark Peters, Andy Pruitt, Miguel Rueda, Ed Ryan, Greg Schlossinger, Chad Smidt, Gywneth Short, Bob Tim, Sue Torrence, Robyn Thompson-Etzel, James Turk, David Whitelock, James Willoughby, Scott Woodward.

There are also many other members, family, friends, patients and colleagues who have supported us along the way, thank you, thank you, thank you!

            What next?

I am sure what comes to mind is… now what? Well, now we must wait a little while longer for DORA to formalize our registration process. Technically, the law is effective July 1. However, the registration application will likely not be available until January or later. Don’t worry you will not be considered non-compliant until then. We just have to give DORA a chance to catch-up. We also do not yet know what the fees will be, but as soon as I hear, you will hear! We will continue to keep you informed as much as possible as the process develops.

For now we should all ENJOY the moment! This is a truly great accomplishment for Athletic Trainers in Colorado, Congratulations!

Vacancy within the CATA by Jenn Dougherty

The Colorado Athletic Trainers Association (CATA) is an organization of volunteers who generously donate their time for the advancement of the profession of athletic training across the state.

We have an opening for the position of Professional Association Liaison. This position will be responsible for building relationships with the various state associations of: physicians, nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, athletic directors, chiropractors, emergency medical professionals, etc.

The BOD feels it is important to increase other associations and group’s awareness of the CATA. We need an individual who can search out these groups and make contact with them to provide: information on the profession of athletic training, CATA leadership information, dates and locations of our annual clinical symposiums and members meetings, and let them know our desires for a positive mutually beneficial relationship between our associations.

If this opportunity to serve the CATA sounds particularly interesting to you please send a short letter of interest to jdougherty-atc@mindspring.com.

Secondary Schools Athletic Training Committee by Lisa Lear

I have help in Dani Parmenter!  We have been asking folks from around the state to help organize their “regions” to better facilitate communication.  Our goal here is to have regions meet, work on SSATC mentoring network goals that reflect those goals of the NATA and then to report to Dani or myself.

Northern region:   Chad Smidt, Orthopedic Center of the Rockies

Western slope:    Wayne Barger, Ft. Lewis College

                            Jeff Stotts, Durango High School

                            Portia Kamps, Bayfield High School

                            Kolin Tomlinson, Ignacio High School

Stephen Urban, Pagosa Springs High School

Mentoring Network Goals for Secondary School ATC’s

Communication tree:

Establish an up to date list of ATC’s in secondary schools in CO

Establish a representative for each school district that will assign a mentor to each new ATC to the school district

Assign a list of mentors breaking down the divisions

Mentoring program:

The representative for each district should hold an annual meeting updating guidelines, policies and procedures as well as contact information for all medical staff involved

The representative should ensure that this contact information is updated on the CATA website

Each new ATC to the district should have an initial meeting with the representative and the mentor if possible

If this is not possible the representative should be in contact with both the mentor and mentee to ensure that all questions are answered

For the first year of the new ATC’s employment:

The mentor and mentee should meet initially and go over the basic policies and procedures of the district as well as ensure that all supplies and contact information for the necessary people have been established and obtained

The mentor and mentee should meet every other week for the first two months

After the first two months they should meet monthly

After the first year the mentor, mentee and representative should meet to establish documentation of the first year and make necessary adjustments to the programs

After the first year the mentor and mentee should be in contact every two months to answer any further questions

After two years the mentor and mentee can discontinue consistent contact unless otherwise agreed upon

Student Athletic Trainer Committee by Jaclyn Lucas

The 11th Annual Student Athletic Trainer Symposium was held on Saturday May 16, 2009 at Valor Christian High School.  We had 24 high school students registered and 22 attended.  The overall feedback from the students was very positive.  The students enjoyed the hands on activities of anatomy, rehab, and taping.  The career panel at the end of the day was another big hit which allowed the students to see the wide variety of settings an ATC can work in and also gave them the opportunity to ask questions to some of the program directors for the Colorado universities.

A questionnaire will be going out to the state high school athletic trainers in order to obtain feedback in regards to what ATCs want to see covered in the symposium.  We are considering having the 12th Annual symposium in February next year in hopes of not having a date conflict with graduation, state track, etc.

I have a few members that are interested in helping on the committee.  If you are interested or have any feedback for this committee, please e-mail me at jmlucasatc@yahoo.com
