PRESIDENT’S LETTER

January 13, 2008

I hope this newsletter finds you and yours well in this new year.  I am looking forward to a fruitful 2008 for both my family and the CATA.

Over the past few years a vast majority of the efforts of the CATA has been towards legislation.  Unfortunately our efforts have not panned out as we had hoped.  This year we have reasons to be optimistic about legislative success.  At this point we have made a lot of strides towards putting a bill forward in the 2008 legislative session.  We submitted an expedited application to DORA and have been given the green light from them to present a bill to the 2008 general assembly.  But BEFORE we go through all that work again we have requested, and are currently arranging a meeting with DORA, the Governor and our two bill sponsors to see EXACTLY what DORA and the governor would approve. Also to see if that “projected bill” would accomplish the goals of the CATA for legislation:  eliminate those who do not possess our education and/or certifications;  eliminate “practice settings”;  define our population of people who AT’s are qualified to work with;  and eliminate those who do posses our education and certifications but who practice illegally.  There is no sense in going through all that hard work and spending all that money to only end up where we have the past two years, with nothing.  We should know shortly where we stand with this effort.

Carrie Meyer, CATA Vice President, and her education committee have been working very hard t develop a top-notch CATA spring seminar.  I am very excited to take part.  Please mark you calendars for April 5th and 6th in Colorado Springs.

Also many other things are going on with the CATA, please read the remainder of the newsletter to see what work is being done by our dedicated core of volunteers.  As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact myself of any other CATA board member.

Sincerely,

Chris Mathewson

President,

Colorado Athletic Trainers Association

STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER COMMITTEE

We are preparing for the 10TH annual Student Athletic Trainer's Symposium!!

This year's SAT symposium will be held in conjunction with the CATA meeting in Colorado Springs.  The student symposium will be on Sunday, April 6th due to spring sports events on Saturdays.  In the past we have had the following topics:  anatomy, basic injuries/evaluation, rehab, taping/bandaging, career/college talk, and then several other topics that change every year.  The past 3 years we have had c-spine injuries/boarding, nutrition, emergency procedures, splinting, heat injuries, and skin conditions.

I am requesting any input on topics or format for this year's symposium.  I feel it necessary to keep anatomy, injury basics, rehab, taping, and career/college talk every year.  I would like to see someone new do the anatomy and injury basics talk.  If Michael Keating and his crew could continue with the rehab section, that would be great!  I would like to incorporate the college students in the taping/wrapping lab.  The college and career talk is best for a curriculum director to explain.  I will work on getting a panel of ATC’s from a variety of settings.  If you are interested in speaking this year or have any ideas for the symposium, please let me know!  I have the template for Sports Medicine Jeopardy and may try to do that this year, depending on our time frame.

Again, please let me know if you would like to speak...either a presentation or on the career/college panel.  If you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact Jaclyn Lucas (jlucas@esdk12.org)

PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE

The Public Relations committee is gearing up for National Athletic Training Month in March.  We have a couple of events in the works but need help throughout the state to promote and put on PR activities throughout the state.  If you have ideas or events planned please contact me so that we may document what is being done by our membership.

Events that are in the works include a public relations booth at the March 29, 2008, Denver Nuggets game to coincide with the presentation of the Excellence in High School Athletic Training Awards.  We need volunteers to help work the table and take pictures of the evening.

The second task we are working on is having Governor Ritter sign a proclamation declaring March National Athletic Training Month in Colorado.  We are trying to set up a photo opportunity for the signing of this proclamation.  More information will follow on a later date.

On another note, I am currently working on setting up regions throughout the state.  My goal is to get a representative in each region for the public relations committee.  This will allow us to have more uniform representation throughout the state and to hopefully enhance public relations activities year round.  This has been a more daunting task than I originally thought, and I will be getting information out to the membership when I have completed this task.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or if you are interested in helping with any events.
