PRESIDENT'S LETTER

January 10, 2007

I hope 2007 has begun well for each of you and your families. It is shaping up to be a very exciting year for athletic trainers in Colorado. We will be introducing a licensure bill in the senate very early in this season’s legislative session.

We have many reasons to be optimistic about successfully passing our bill into law:
1. We have very strong sponsors in both the house and senate;
2. We have made a lot of friends at the capitol and have many legislators who support our efforts;
3. We have “neutralized” a great deal of the opposition to our bill;
4. And we have our experience from last year to help us through the “marathon”.

Honestly the key to our campaign this year will be how the majority of our membership responds to the effort. Historically we have can count on about 8-12% of our membership helping out. IF we can harness that other 88% and truly create a wave of support for our bill, I think we will succeed in passing a bill that will advance our profession. It is my hope that that 88% of our membership can see that the passage of a strong licensure will benefit everyone and consequently step up and chip in.

Please watch your mailboxes, e-mail boxes and voice mail for instructions on how you can contribute to this year’s effort.

I wish you all the best this year.

Sincerely,

Chris Mathewson
President,
Colorado Athletic Trainers Association

A LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Well we’re at it again!  Our bill was introduced in the Senate as Senate bill 24 (SB24)

We have been assigned to the Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee and are now waiting for the hearing date. A group of dedicated CATA members attended a training session the first weekend of January to prepare for our upcoming testimony.  Members of the NATA LIME team along with Charlie Hebeler and a gracious friend of hers, Carol Taylor, who is a former legislator, provided a “mock hearing” which helped us prepare. We are very excited about the road ahead. We know it’s a long road and we may hit obstacles again this year but we are confident we can make the journey successfully.

We are still calling on ALL MEMBERS to get involved! We have sent out an “invoice” to all members to help us fundraise. Unfortunately, the legislative process is expensive! We will need your help to get it done. We will also be sending out e-blasts periodically requesting that you contact your legislators. We have a new streamlined process this year that will be as simple as a few clicks of the mouse. Again this year…the more legislators who hear from our membership, the better chance we have of being successful in our quest.

Once again I must say a HUGE THANKS to our lobbyist Charlie Hebeler, Rick Ball our legal consultant, the NATA and especially to our dedicated Legislative Action Task Force (LATF) and the CATA BOD for all of your time and effort.

We are very excited and looking forward AGAIN to a POSITIVE OUTCOME this May!

Respectfully Submitted,

Jennifer Dougherty, MA, ATC

LATF Co-Chair

GETTING INVOLVED - CATA NEEDS YOUR HELP!

On January 3, 2007, the CATA sent a letter to all members to inform them of what is currently taking place on the legislative front.  The BOD and LATF are working very hard to prepare for the upcoming legislative session.  Care has been taken to cover all bases, but we need the help of all members to make licensure a reality.

One area in which all can contribute is to our fundraising campaign.  The CATA needs to raise $10,000 in the first half of 2007.  The NATA GAC granted us a monetary sum with the contingency that we could raise $10,000.  The CATA BOD felt this was a reasonable goal as it would amount to only $25 per member (although if you wish to contribute more, we will we happily accept it).

All CATA members should be receiving an "invoice" for a Legislative Action Fee.  While the CATA cannot impose a mandatory fee (that can only be done on the district level), it is our hope that EVERY member will donate to this cause as they recognize that legislation for athletic trainers will affect EVERY ATC in the state regardless of work setting.

If you did not receive a letter and invoice, please contact Gregg Harper.

First Annual Fall CATA Symposium a success!

The fall symposium held in Vail on November 11th was a huge success. We had 102 total registrants and 5 vendors attend the day long educational session. In addition to this being the first fall CATA symposium, it was also the first symposium to be co-hosted with another group. Vail-Summit Orthopaedics was an integral part of the success of this meeting. I would like to thank Dr. Richard Cunningham and Greg Schlossinger for coordinating the educational component of the inaugural Fall Symposium. They put on a great session in a great location. Thank you.

I would like to recognize Connie Larsen for all of her hard work with coordinating the registration for this meeting along with Dominic DiManna, Kelly Brick, and Chris Nagelhout who assisted with the on-site registration for the symposium. Also, thanks to Catelyn Staley, Noah Larsen, and Kim Oderwald, athletic training students, who assisted with set up and take down at Vail Mountain School. Last but not least, thank you to Jason McWilliams for coordinating the vendors who attended and helped make this happen.

Congratulations to all for making the 1st Annual Fall CATA Symposium a success. I look forward to working on next year’s program and would appreciate any suggestions from the members on ways to improve this program.

Thank you to all. Please remember to attend the CATA business meeting being held during the RMATA symposium in Denver, April 19-22, 2007.

Sincerely;

Carrie Meyer, EdD, ATC

Public Relations Committee:

I am very honored to have taken over as public relations chair for the CATA.  Bob Timm did a great job in this post and I plan on continuing along that same path.

March is quickly approaching.  As we all know, National Athletic Training Month is a great way to promote our profession.  I ask that everyone do their part in each individual setting and area of the state to make this possible.

I am working with the committee to plan certain events and will be emailing all members with PR ideas and links.  We are working on getting our new governor to sign a proclamation for NATM, as has been done in the past.  There will also be the CATA night at the Nuggets game.  We will have a booth promoting athletic training and Jim Gillen will be presenting the High School Athletic Training Awards that night as well.  The date is set for March 17th.  I urge all high school Athletic Trainers to apply for this award.  Information can be found on the Nuggets website.

While NATM is a huge priority for this committee, we also want to do things throughout the year to promote and enhance our profession.  Please contact me with ideas you may have or if you would like to be a member of the PR committee.

Student Athletic Trainer Symposium:

We have decided to keep the high school student symposium under the same format in regards to topics.  We will always cover basic anatomy, injury basics, rehabilitation, taping, and college/career discussion.  Each year we will incorporate 1-2 topics.  I have considered adding CPR into the course as it wouldn't take too long to go over, given the new guidelines.  I am not positive when this symposium will take place, not knowing yet if we are having a state meeting in conjunction with districts.  If anyone is interested in presenting on one of the topics, please contact me.  Let me know if you have any other suggestions.
