2007 Summer CATA Newsletter CATA ELECTION COMMITTEE UPDATE STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER SYMPOSIUM A SUCCESS STAY CURRENT WITH CATA HAPPENINGS
Dear Members,
I hope this summer newsletter finds you and yours well and enjoying this wonderful Colorado summer.
Through the past three years the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association has kind of become a “one-headed monster”; we have been so focused on legislation that regrettably some things had fell by the wayside. Now that the legislation chapter has been closed on us it is time to get the other aspects of the association going strong again. If you are interested in joining together with us please contact me or any other board member.
Once again I want to thank all those members who assisted in our legislative effort, although the results were not as we had hoped I am proud to say we tried.
Have a great summer.
Sincerely,
Chris Mathewson President, Colorado Athletic Trainers Association
On Monday, June, 4, 2007, Governor Bill Ritter vetoed SB 24, The Athletic Trainers' Practice Act, stating he did not see a need for state regulation beyond what is already in place. He felt the athletic trainers of Colorado already do an adequate job regulating themselves, and that to impose further regulation would only be an extra cost to the athletic trainers and the state. To view the Governor's complete reason for this action go to http://www.colorado.gov/governor/press/june07/veto-bill-SB24.html
This certainly came as a blow to the athletic trainers and other professionals who worked so hard to make licensure and increased protection of our profession a reality in Colorado. Special thanks goes to our lobbyist, Charlie Hebeler, the many people who served on the Legislative Action Task Force, including the chairs of the committee, Jennifer Dougherty and Pat Karns, and the CATA Board of Directors for their many hours of work and effort in this process.
Where do we go from here? First, the CATA Board Of Directors wants to hear from you. Feel free to contact any member of the BOD to express your ideas on how to proceed. Second, the BOD is working to set up and meeting with Governor Ritter to talk face to face about how each view's the importance of athletic training licensure. Check back to the website and upcoming newsletters for updates.
The 2007 Annual Business Meeting was held on June 24, 2007 on the campus of Regis University. Reports were given by the Board of Directors and Committee heads. Topics of discussion included efforts in the licensure process, the upcoming fall meeting, and election nominations. For a complete report on this important meeting, click here.
