President’s Letter

July 1, 2005

Dear Members:

I hope this newsletter finds your and yours well and enjoying the Colorado summer.  This is a time of the year when you go outside and really learn why we live here in Colorado.  It is also the time of year when those of us who work in the “traditional” setting wonder why anyone would not choose to work in our setting.  Then August comes around and we are up to our eyeballs in ice, gauze, water coolers and thunderstorms and we begin to think that maybe those who work in the clinical setting are on to something.  J

I have been a part of the CATA for 11 years and actively involved on the board for nearly eight, and I can think of no other time when so many exciting things are going on with the association.  We continue to progress through our DORA review,; we have hired a AWESOME lobbyist who is a joy to work with; we are preparing to submit for possibly the largest NATA Governmental Affairs Committee funding request ever; we are beginning the process of reaching out to our state senators and representatives; and we are elbows deep in the planning of our MAJOR fundraiser.  For details of all the above please read this newsletter thoroughly.

While it is “summer break” for many of us, I am happy to report to you that there are MANY dedicated members working hard for the advancement of our profession and OUR state association.  I would personally like to thank the board of directors, the committee heads and state representatives, and members of the legislative action task force for all their hard work and commitment.  The CATA is truly on the brink of becoming one of the BEST state associations in the entire nation and it could not be possible without dedication of so many people.

It is never too late to join the strong volunteer force of the CATA.  We have many helping out, but could always use YOU.  As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me or any board of directors member.

Sincerely,

Auction proceeds benefit the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association.

One of the questions that was asked at every one of the five town hall meetings that were held this past winter by the CATA Board of Directors was: “How much is this legislation effort going to cost me?”   The actual application and license fee will be determined by the state, and is out of control of the CATA.  However comparing our numbers to other organizations of similar sizes, we do anticipate extremely large fees.

Where it will be costly is the actual legislation process.  The CATA needs funds for paying a top-notch lobbyist and her expenses (see LATF report), funds for our consultant, and funds for the LATF to properly function.  Because of the foresight of the previous boards of directors the CATA does have a reasonable amount saved for legislative purposes, and we are eligible for funding from the NATA Governmental Affairs Committee.  Yet we do not want to depend solely on those sources.  Nor do we want to exhaust all of those funds with our efforts.

We also did not want to ask our members for donations to replace the money that must be spent during this process.  But the fact of the matter is: athletic training legislation will affect EVERY certified athletic trainer in the state REGARDLESS of setting, and consequently the membership should bear some financial responsibility.  The BOD wanted to reach out in a different manner rather than just soliciting donations from our members we wanted to hold an event where the members will “receive something for their money”.  We also do not want to depend completely on the membership to meet our goal of $25,000 raised.

With those two issues in mind the BOD created the idea of a “Celebration of Athletic Training” we want to publicly celebrate what we do and who we are as professionals.  We would like to host an event where in addition to CATA members, our family, friends, professional associates, team physicians, coaches, administrators, medical peers and anyone else who means a lot to us will come and celebrate the profession of athletic training.

One idea that has been suggested to the NATA by our national lobbyist is the idea of holding a sports memorabilia auction as a fund raiser for the state associations.  Mr. Finnerfrock was stunned to hear that athletic trainers have access to the sports memorabilia that we do, and we just go about selling it to ourselves at raffles and such.  The NATA has suggested this approach to many states and really does think it could be a successful fundraiser.  They were very happy to see that the CATA is going to try such an event.  They are eagerly watching our efforts and results.

One quick search on google.com or reviewing the items for sale on e-bay will show clearly just how large the sports memorabilia market is.  Looking at the sale prices of some items will also show that if done correctly a sports memorabilia auction could be a very lucrative fundraiser.

The BOD noted that hosting a sports memorabilia auction as a fundraiser has two major hurdles:

  • The first is having the people on the teams who can help the CATA get the items that people want to pay BIG money for.

  • The second is getting the people with the BIG money to attend our event.

The CATA has contacted every professional sports team and all the colleges and universities across Colorado to seek help with acquiring the sports memorabilia items.  So far we have been very graciously received and items are beginning to role in.  We also have agreed to have a national company help us acquire some of the “true” collectable items nationwide.  Our goal is to offer over 100 different sports memorabilia items.

In addition to the sports memorabilia items we are also hoping to offer ticket and travel packages to sporting events; and other unique sporting items.  The professional and college athletic trainers are busy helping us with this also.

Finally we are also approaching hundreds of businesses seeking the standard silent auction fare:  sporting goods, electronics, rounds of golf, ski packages, hotel nights, day spa gift packages, restaurant gift cards, etc. and are hoping to meet our goal of 100 “other” items for the silent auction.

The second issue to a successful sports memorabilia auction requires a GREAT DEAL of help from the LATF and EVERY CATA member.  While we, of course, want as many CATA members to come and attend our celebration; if those are the only people at the event then the CATA is just continuing to fund raise off of ourselves.  We need YOUR help to invite people who you think might be interested in attending.  I have an invite list of 47 people.  I plan to personally contact EACH one of them and let them know how much this event means to me and my association, and that I would very much like to celebrate with them.

In addition to our silent auction we present Steve Antonopulos with his RMATA Hall of Fame Award, as he was unable to attend the presentation ceremony in Phoenix this past April.  Mr. Antonopulos will also give the keynote address of the evening.

We are hoping that EVERY CATA member create a list of people who mean a lot to you either personally or professionally and submit it to Jennifer Dougherty jdougherty-atc@mindspring.com They will then receive a personal invitation.    Please mark you calendars and plan on attending our Celebration of Athletic Training dinner on September 24, 2005, 6:00-11:30 pm at Invesco Field at Mile High.  To order tickets please contact Jennifer Dougherty jdougherty-atc@mindspring.com

Please don’t delay as there are ONLY 430 tickets available.

9News Health Fair a Success

The CATA was an official contributor for the 9 News Health fair this year.  We signed a contract to do 9 different sites in the Denver / Metro area.  Our charge was to do skin fold measurements. We had about 15 CATA members volunteer to work the different sites for a total of 75 hours of work. At each site, about 125 participants were pinched.  We handed out about 150 athletic training pens, and over 300 athletic training water bottles to participate.  The pens and water bottles were given out as a public relations effort to educate the public on what the profession of athletic training is all about. The CATA logo was on about 5,000 participates bags.

The feedback we have gotten from organizers, workers, and participates has been very positive. This was our first year as being on official contributor to the 9 News Health fair, there are some improvements we can make in the future to make to better benefit the CATA. We hope to continue this project in the future.

I would like to thank the CATA members that volunteered their time and effort to help with this event. Jaclyn Lucas, Kelly Brick, Lisa Lear, Shannon Courtney, Abby Gardner, Connie Larson, Rawley Klingsmith, Jon Bosh, Gwyneth Short, Clay Selby, and Jason McWilliams.

Sincerely

Carrie Haugen

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Legislative Action Task Force – Jennifer Dougherty, Chairperson

Hey have you heard of us, The Legislative Action Task Force (LATF)? You’re probably tired of hearing about us at this point…we actually hope that this is the case. Over the next few months we will be contacting every ATC in Colorado to tell you of the many great things we have coming up! We’ll be reaching out through phone calls, newsletters, e-blasts and mailings. So what are we up to? First, we have hired a lobbyist, Charlotte “Charlie” Hebeler, who has extensive experience dealing with legislative issues for healthcare professionals like us. Charlie has worked with the Dental Association, Nurses Association, Audiologists, and Respiratory Therapists to name a few! Charlie has many years of experience working in governmental affairs, she holds a BSN, an MS in Community Health Nursing and a PhD in Public Health. Finally, she actually understands what we do as allied health care professionals! In a nutshell we are in good hands with Charlie and are lucky to have found such a knowledgeable lobbyist. Second, our first fundraising event is on the map! On September 24, 2005 at 6pm at the Invesco Field West Club we will host a “Celebration of Athletic Training” Dinner and Auction. At this event we will also be honoring the induction of Steve Antonopulos to the RMATA Hall of Fame. Steve has also graciously agreed to be our Keynote Speaker, Thanks Steve! As for the fundraising portion of the event we will be holding a Silent and Live Auction featuring a large Sports Memorabilia offering as well as general auction items. The more successful our fund-raiser, the less we must ask of our members financially to support our legislative efforts in the future. So please come out and join us for this spectacular event!  How can I get there you ask? Invitations are going out in the mail to all ATC’s in Colorado this week. Have friends or family you would like to invite? Email me, I’ll send them an invitation, or there will be a registration form posted online shortly that can be completed and mailed in. Of course, if your contact information is not updated with the NATA or the BOC you will not get the mailing. If this is the case...please contact me. We want to include everyone, as this legislation will effect every Athletic Trainer in every setting in Colorado.

The LATF is continuing to meet monthly and are working really hard to achieve our ultimate goal…becoming a LICENSED profession here in Colorado.

Questions?  Call Jennifer Dougherty (LATF Chair) at 303-908-6303 or email me at jdougherty-atc@mindspring.com.

Also, please check the CATA Web site under the Legislation Page for the latest & greatest information!

College and University Committee – Shannon Courtney, State Representative

Hope you are all enjoying the end of summer, and are beginning to feel the anxiety of pre-season. I wanted to bring your attention to some items that may interest you.

I attended the college and university symposium in Las Vegas early May. It was a great meeting, one that I would encourage you all to attend. If you have interest in this organization their web site is: http:/www.collegeathletictrainer.org.  The topics were extremely relevant to the collegiate setting and were different than what you find at most meetings.

One topic that was covered was concerning MRSA (Staph) out breaks. University of Southern California experienced a large outbreak of the resistant bacteria, and discussed many of the ways they are combating this problem which broke out on their football team. The CDC recommends the following practices for preventing staphylococcal skin infections:

  • Making soap available in locker rooms and educating the athletes the importance of showering immediately after their practice and workout. Encourage good hygiene.

  • Washing clothes and equipment

  • Cleaning locker rooms, lockers, weight rooms, and athletic training rooms

  • Removing soiled towels from the benches (they went to disposable towels on the sidelines with football)

  • Discourage sharing of towels and personal items

  • Establish  routine cleaning schedules for shared equipment.

  • Train athletes and coaches in first aid for wounds and recognition of wounds that are potentially infected.

  • Encourage your athletes to report skin lesions to coaches and encourage coaches to assess athletes regularly for skin lesions.

Remember to watch for heat illnesses. A Missouri football player collapsed recently following workouts and died from heat exposure. That marks at least one collegiate death every year for the last three years.

The other big news, if you haven’t heard is that the national certification exam is moving to a computer based testing system beginning in the Spring of 2006. If students taking the exam have not passed all three sections by the last testing date in November, they will be required to complete the entire computer exam regardless of any sections previously passed.  More details are quickly becoming available and can be found on the BOC website. This may change how we prepare student for the national exam.

Corporate Sponsorship – Jason McWilliams, Chairperson

Corporate sponsorship grew one member this month adding Peak PT & Wellness in Parker.  They have a very nice facility and we appreciate them helping out.  An additional five membership applications were sent out this month.  Feel free to contact me with any interested parties. Jason McWilliams

Revenue Committee -- Clay Selby, State Representative

The NATA has filed a lawsuit regarding the parts of CMS rule governing "incident to" therapy services provided by certified athletic trainers in a clinical setting. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has agreed in a court order to delay implementing key portions of a new rule from the CMS.

The rule at issue,
CMS decided to no longer pay for therapy services incident to a physician’s services unless the provider is a physical therapist, occupational therapist or speech/language pathologist was set to take effect June 6.

The NATA maintains the
CMS rule nullifies more than 35 years of policy and contradicts the statutory provision authorizing Medicare reimbursement for therapy services performed by qualified providers "incident to" physicians’ services. While the suit seeks to set aside the provisions at issue, it also goes a step further by asking that HHS (through CMS) be required to specify that athletic trainers and other allied health professionals are authorized to provide therapy incident to a physician’s services.

Secondary Schools Athletic Training Committee -- Lisa Lear, Chairperson

The Secondary Schools Athletic Training Committee is currently awaiting feedback from the national summit meeting.  Also, we are in the process of establishing a Secondary School Athletic Training database on the CATA website.

Public Relations Committee – Bob Tim, Chairperson and RMATA State Representative

The CATA Public Relations committee won "Honorable Mention" from the NATA
in their annual public relations contest.  Last year Jim Gillen won the
category of Best New Idea.  This year it was the combined efforts of all
the public relations events which won the award.  This year's events
included:  Proclamation by Governor Owens declaring March as National
Athletic Training Month, Excellence in High School Athletic training award
by the Denver Nuggets, Channel 9 Health Fairs, T-shirt toss at various
sporting events, and television interviews and newspaper articles
regarding athletic training.  Thank you to everyone who helped in any of
this year’s events.  We hope to do even more next year.
Bob Tim MA, ATC
Chairman - Public Relations Committee
