CATA NEWSLETTER SPRING 2005
Annual Meeting a Great Success CATA MEMBERS RECOGNIZED FOR EXCELLENCE EXCELLENCE IN ATHLETIC TRAINING IN COLORADO HIGH SCHOOLS Outstanding Promotion of Athletic Training Month Award
COMMITTEE AND NATIONAL STATE REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS
Dear Members:
Yesterday it was nearly 70 degrees, bright and sunshine. Today it is wet, windy and snowing. Welcome to spring time in the Rockies. I hope this newsletter finds you and yours well and happy.
Since the last newsletter a lot of exciting things have been happening in the CATA. The legislative efforts continue to move forward; several members received district and national awards; and our annual meeting was a great success.
Please read through this newsletter, it contains a great deal of very important information about all the hard work that is being done on your behalf for OUR association. As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact myself or any board member.
Chris Mathewson President, Colorado Athletic Trainers Association
Annual Meeting a Great Success - Chris Mathewson
Based on the course surveys completed by those
in attendance, members felt it was a good meeting. The meeting received a 4.33
rating out of 5. Several members provided additional positive comments: “great
topics”; “very educational”; “CPR certification was a great idea”; “good food”.
Suggestions on topics for next year and issues that might be improved were also
provided and will be considered when
I would like to personally thank several members for their hard work; their dedication to the CATA was very obvious to any member who attended the meeting: Lisa Lear, Carrie Haugen, Connie Larsen, Dominic DiManna, Margaret Hunt and Jaclyn Lucas. Thank you.
Education Committee Formed - Chris Mathewson
Based upon suggestions from members, the CATA board of directors voted unanimously to create an “Education Committee”. This committee will be chaired by Carrie Haugen, CATA Vice President.
According to CATA by-laws the Vice President’s primary role is to provide educational opportunities for members. In the past this has been accomplished through our annual clinical symposium. While this symposium has historically been well attended by CATA members, the BOD felt it would be prudent to provide additional educational opportunities throughout the year and across the state.
Carrie Haugen and the BOD are currently finalizing the committee responsibilities and policies. Upon completion they will be posted on the website.
Any CATA member who is interested in creating and/or coordinating member education or has a desire to present educational topics to other CATA members is encouraged to contact Carrie Haugen carrie.haugen@unco.edu or any board member.

COMMITTEE AND NATIONAL STATE REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS
Legislative Action Task Force - Jennifer Dougherty
You always hear the phrase: A Grass Roots effort! The Legislative Action Task Force (LATF) has been hard at work doing exactly that! We are trying to get the word out about our Legislative efforts to all ATC’s in Colorado. Since the last newsletter we have completed 5 Town Hall meetings around the state, presented information at the CATA Annual Meeting and have set up communication groups. Every ATC in Colorado has been “assigned” to a member of the LATF creating a “communication group”. This LATF member is responsible for keeping you informed along the way. At this point you should have received at least a phone call and letter from them. That is …if your contact information is correct with the NATA or BOC! If not…please update it, it’s the only way we have to keep you informed!
The LATF has been meeting monthly. We are gearing our efforts toward: keeping you informed, providing information requested by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA, who is reviewing our application for regulation), identifying legislators that may want to sponsor our bill, training on how to speak with those legislators, and meeting with other healthcare provider professional organizations. Our next big job will be FUNDRAISING! Confused? / Questions? Call Jennifer Dougherty (LATF Chair) at 303-908-6303.
Also, please check the CATA Web site under the Legislation Page for the latest information!
CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP – Jason McWilliams
The corporate sponsorship committee is
continuing to solicit for sponsorship of the CATA. Since the annual business meeting & clinical symposium we have seen
some interest from the Durango area as
well as Colorado Springs. Thank you to those individuals who have helped with
those locations. We are still interested in the Fort Collins and the Grand
Junction area. Please forward any information to the committee.

Scholarships and Awards - Colleen Conroy
The committee is now accepting nominations for the Outstanding Promotion of Athletic Training Month Award, click here for more information.
Currently, applications are being reviewed for
the Dan Libera Memorial and Jim Conboy Memorial Scholarships.
Student Athletic Trainer - Jaclyn Lucas
My goals for next year are to continue with a hands-on approach. I would like to put on two symposiums throughout the year; one for beginners and one for advanced. My intentions are to have the college/university students assist with the beginner symposium and ATC’s assist with the advanced symposium. I would like to have a student section on the web-site, but I'm not sure if I will be able to accomplish that this year. I have received some feedback from the membership in regards to other things we can do with the students. Please continue to give me any ideas, comments, or questions for this committee.
PROFESSIONAL BOARD LIAISON – Gwyneth Short
The professional liaison committee has continued to strive to build relationships within the medical community. Through involvement in the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and its Health Care Committee, we are identifying organizations and individuals with whom we would like to partner. We are working closely with the Legislative Action Task Force to ensure that we are presenting complimentary actions in our efforts to enhance the position of athletic trainers in the state of Colorado. The committee is looking for members who would like to be involved in building relationships within the medical community.
COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY – Shannon Courtney
Hope everyone’s spring is going well
and injury free, summer is just around the corner. There has not been much
action of late with the college/university committee. I will be attending the
CATS (College Athletic Trainers Society) annual meeting in May and will
hopefully have some very good information to share with you. I am hoping to get
a link on the CATA web page to be able to communicate directly with you. As always if
you have concerns or would like to share your comments with me I
REVENUE – Clay Selby
A formal notification if CMS has stopped reimbursement for billing of approved CPT codes by ATCs has net been made. When this goes into effect it will only apply to those codes used for “therapy” activities, other non-therapy codes will continue being reimbursed by CMS. All other third party payers are continuing to reimburse for all approved codes billed by ATCs. Clay Selby
secondary schools - Lisa Lear
Currently, plans are being made to establish a database of all Colorado high school athletic trainers and their contact information.
Several events offering CEU’s have been posted to the upcoming events page of the website. Click here to view all of these athletic training educational opportunities.
