PRESIDENTS LETTER

Dear Members:

Yesterday it was nearly 70 degrees, bright and sunshine.  Today it is wet, windy and snowing.  Welcome to spring time in the Rockies.  I hope this newsletter finds you and yours well and happy.

Since the last newsletter a lot of exciting things have been happening in the CATA.  The legislative efforts continue to move forward; several members received district and national awards; and our annual meeting was a great success.

Please read through this newsletter, it contains a great deal of very important information about all the hard work that is being done on your behalf for OUR association.  As always if you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact myself or any board member.

Sincerely,

Chris Mathewson

President,

Colorado Athletic Trainers Association

Annual Meeting a Great Success - Chris Mathewson

For those CATA members who did not attend the annual meeting held in Greeley, March 19th and 20th you missed out!  The meeting was a wonderful success. More than 130 CATA members came and took part.

Based on the course surveys completed by those in attendance, members felt it was a good meeting.  The meeting received a 4.33 rating out of 5.  Several members provided additional positive comments: “great topics”; “very educational”; “CPR certification was a great idea”; “good food”.  Suggestions on topics for next year and issues that might be improved were also provided and will be considered when planning begins for 2006.

I would like to personally thank several members for their hard work; their dedication to the CATA was very obvious to any member who attended the meeting: Lisa Lear, Carrie Haugen, Connie Larsen, Dominic DiManna, Margaret Hunt and Jaclyn Lucas.  Thank you.

Education Committee Formed - Chris Mathewson

Based upon suggestions from members, the CATA board of directors voted unanimously to create an “Education Committee”.  This committee will be chaired by Carrie Haugen, CATA Vice President.

According to CATA by-laws the Vice President’s primary role is to provide educational opportunities for members.  In the past this has been accomplished through our annual clinical symposium.  While this symposium has historically been well attended by CATA members, the BOD felt it would be prudent to provide additional educational opportunities throughout the year and across the state.

Carrie Haugen and the BOD are currently finalizing the committee responsibilities and policies.  Upon completion they will be posted on the website.

Any CATA member who is interested in creating and/or coordinating member education or has a desire to present educational topics to other CATA members is encouraged to contact Carrie Haugen carrie.haugen@unco.edu or any board member.

COMMITTEE AND NATIONAL STATE REPRESENTATIVE REPORTS

Legislative Action Task Force - Jennifer Dougherty

You always hear the phrase: A Grass Roots effort! The Legislative Action Task Force (LATF) has been hard at work doing exactly that! We are trying to get the word out about our Legislative efforts to all ATC’s in Colorado. Since the last newsletter we have completed 5 Town Hall meetings around the state, presented information at the CATA Annual Meeting and have set up communication groups. Every ATC in Colorado has been “assigned” to a member of the LATF creating a “communication group”. This LATF member is responsible for keeping you informed along the way. At this point you should have received at least a phone call and letter from them. That is …if your contact information is correct with the NATA or BOC! If not…please update it, it’s the only way we have to keep you informed!

The LATF has been meeting monthly. We are gearing our efforts toward: keeping you informed, providing information requested by the Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA, who is reviewing our application for regulation), identifying legislators that may want to sponsor our bill, training on how to speak with those legislators, and meeting with other healthcare provider professional organizations.  Our next big job will be FUNDRAISING!

Confused? / Questions?  Call Jennifer Dougherty (LATF Chair) at 303-908-6303.

Also, please check the CATA Web site under the Legislation Page for the latest information!

CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPJason McWilliams

The corporate sponsorship committee is continuing to solicit for sponsorship of the CATA.  Since the annual business meeting & clinical symposium we have seen some interest from the Durango area as well as Colorado Springs.  Thank  you to those individuals who have helped with those locations.  We are still interested in the Fort Collins and the Grand Junction area.  Please forward any information to the committee.

Public Relations -  Bob Tim

National Athletic Training Month

This was a very successful year for the Public Relations Committee.  We
continue to increase the number of events that we are involved with that
promote our profession.

The following is a list of events that happened around Colorado during the month of March.

*Received a Proclamation from Governor Bill Owens declaring March as
National Athletic Training month.  This is the fourth consecutive year
that we have received the proclamation.

*Received a Proclamation from Mark Ruzzin, Mayor of Boulder Colorado (center).  Shown here being accepted by Shannon Aberton, ATC (left) and Michael Keating, ATC (right).

*Jim Gillen, head athletic trainer for the Denver Nuggets, presented 4

high schools with the Excellence in High School Athletic Training award. Chris Mathewson,
Ponderosa High School, and Bob Tim, Widefield High School were the first place winners.  Both schools received $2,000 for their athletic training room.  Kevin Margarucci, Lewis Palmer High School, and Tom Bradley, Highlands Ranch High School, were runner ups.  Each of those schools received $500. The awards were given out just prior to tip off of the Denver Nuggets home game on March 20th.

The student athletic trainersfrom Ponderosa and Widefield received free tickets to the game. This is the second year that Jim Gillen has given this award.  Pictures and an article regarding the award can be seen on the Denver Nugget’s web site.

An article was also in the Denver Post regarding the awards.

*T-shirt toss - This year we initiated a t-shirt toss where athletic
trainers threw out t-shirts while a public service announcement was being read at basketball games.  The t-shirts displayed the NATA’s logo for National Athletic Training Month.  Shirts were thrown out at Thunderridge High School, Fountain
Fort Carson High School, Widefield High School, the Air Force Academy and the Denver Nuggets games.

*Channel 9 Health Fairs - The Colorado Athletic Trainers Association and
Channel 9 Health Fairs began a partnership. Athletic trainers will assist
with nine health fairs throughout
Colorado by measuring skin folds, in
return, the athletic trainers will be able to educate the public about our
profession.  Water bottles and pens displaying the National Athletic
Training month logo will be distributed.  The Colorado Athletic Trainers
association will also receive free advertising with all of Channel 9
Health Fair’s advertising.

*Pens and notepads were distributed to clinics and physicians offices
displaying the National Athletic Training month logo and the Colorado
Athletic Trainer’s logo and web site.

*An article was written in the Colorado Springs Gazette newspaper
describing a day in the athletic training room with PJ Gardner, athletic
trainer at Liberty
High School.

*An interview was done by channel 5/30 television station with Bob Tim,
athletic trainer at
Widefield High School.  It aired during the morning
show and gave tips to athletes and parents about ways to prevent injuries.

Thank you to everyone who participated in any of these events.  I'm sure there are more things that happened that we are unaware of, keep up the good work.

Student Athletic Trainer - Jaclyn Lucas

This year's SAT Symposium went over very well. It was held on Saturday March 19 at UNC.  We had 51 students register, and 44 attend.  The symposium covered basic anatomy (lecture and palpation), basic evaluation, rehabilitation, ankle taping, emergency procedures, splinting, and college/setting options.  I would like to thank the following colleagues for presenting at the symposium: Darryl Miller, Ami Gallivan, Michael Keating, Jeff Steib, Jason Amrich, Fort Lewis Students (Alaina Abrahamson, Holly Fry, and Cricket Medberry), University of Northern Colorado Students (Liz McMurtry, Krisy Eharis, Chace Donathan, and Brandon Ferguson), Carrie Meyer, Margaret Hunt, Mark Peters, Jim Gillen, John Thomas, and Corey Oshikoya.  A huge thank you goes out to Centennial Sales for donating tape and pre-wrap for the taping lab.  I received positive evaluations from the students and from the speakers.

My goals for next year are to continue with a hands-on approach.  I would like to put on two symposiums throughout the year; one for beginners and one for advanced.  My intentions are to have the college/university students assist with the beginner symposium and ATC’s assist with the advanced symposium.  I would like to have a student section on the web-site, but I'm not sure if I will be able to accomplish that this year.  I have received some feedback from the membership in regards to other things we can do with the students.  Please continue to give me any ideas, comments, or questions for this committee.

PROFESSIONAL BOARD LIAISON – Gwyneth Short

The professional liaison committee has continued to strive to build relationships within the medical community.  Through involvement in the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and its Health Care Committee, we are identifying organizations and individuals with whom we would like to partner.  We are working closely with the Legislative Action Task Force to ensure that we are presenting complimentary actions in our efforts to enhance the position of athletic trainers in the state of Colorado.  The committee is looking for members who would like to be involved in building relationships within the medical community.

COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY – Shannon Courtney

Hope everyone’s spring is going well and injury free, summer is just around the corner. There has not been much action of late with the college/university committee. I will be attending the CATS (College Athletic Trainers Society) annual meeting in May and will hopefully have some very good information to share with you. I am hoping to get a link on the CATA web page to be able to communicate directly with you. As always if you have concerns or would like to share your comments with me I would be happy to hear from you.

REVENUE – Clay Selby

A formal notification if CMS has stopped reimbursement for billing of approved CPT codes by ATCs has net been made.  When this goes into effect it will only apply to those codes used for “therapy” activities, other non-therapy codes will continue being reimbursed by CMS.  All other third party payers are continuing to reimburse for all approved codes billed by ATCs.  Clay Selby
