Fall 2003 Newsletter

Letter from the President

Dear Members:

I hope this newsletter finds you and your family in good health and high spirits.  I am happy to present this Fall 2003 Newsletter to you.  Many exciting things are happening in the CATA. Please read this edition and update yourselves. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact myself or any CATA Board of Directors (BOD) member.

In our Summer 2003 Special Edition Newsletter we announced various openings in the CATA.  I was very happy to see that some members were interested in serving the CATA.  Please read the article Appointments to CATA for a complete listing of the members who have been appointed by the BOD. We will be a stronger organization with their efforts and I would like to thank them for their commitment.

March 25-28, 2004 at the Omni Interlocken Hotel in Broomfield the CATA will host the 20th Annual Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association (RMATA) Symposium.  Please plan to attend, it looks to be a great seminar.  You will soon be receiving registration and symposium information in the mail.

As hosts of the RMATA 2004 the CATA is responsible for various items of the seminar (stuffing notebooks, registration table, introducing speakers, etc).  We would like to develop a “volunteer list” of members who would be willing to donate some time to help out.  Please contact any CATA BOD member to volunteer.  Colorado is the largest state in the RMATA and it is our turn to shine.  Please consider volunteering.

I hope you have a great holiday season.

Sincerely,

Chris Mathewson

CATA President

Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic Throwing Shoulder Symposium February 2004

Dear Certified Athletic Trainer,

We are the physicians and certified athletic trainers of the Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic.  For the past four seasons we have been the team physicians and assistant trainers for the Colorado Rockies major and minor league teams.  Through this relationship, and our own orthopedic sports medicine practices, we have developed a particular interest in injuries which occur to the throwing athlete.

Simply making correct diagnoses for these complex throwing injuries can be challenging, not to mention the ever evolving treatment (operative vs. nonoperative) and rehab protocols.  By working through these injuries together, we (the physicians and trainers) are constantly educating each other and hopefully creating the best possible outcome for our athletes.  This beneficial relationship has provided the impetus to host a conference on throwing injuries.

Our aim is to create an educational seminar about the unique shoulder and elbow injuries which occur to throwing athletes.  We’ll share with you what we’ve learned and hope to continue our education through hearing about your valuable experiences as an ATC on the front line.

The seminar will be Saturday, February 7, from 8 am to 1pm at Amerisuites-Denver Tech Center.  It will carry 5 CEU’s and there is NO FEE.  The tentative schedule is as follows:

8 – 10 am            Shoulder (labrum and cuff tears, instability, internal impingement)

10 -10:15            Break

10:30 –12:30       Elbow (valgus overload – MCL tear, flexor-pronator strain, ulnar nerve, posterior-medial impingement, bone spurs and cartilage defects)

12:30 –1:00         Miscellaneous

Didactic talks of about 15 minutes will be followed by an open forum discussion.

Please RSVP to Kate or Clay by 1/16/2004 at 303-694-3333 or email khumphreys@shcdenver.com

We look forward to meeting you all and a great meeting!

Sincerely,

Tom Noonan, MD                                          Doug Wyland, MD
