Summer 2002 Newsletter
In this Issue... Dear CATA Member, I hope that you had a successful spring sports season and are finding a chance to enjoy the beginning of the summer. Enclosed in this newsletter is a tremendous amount of information that has been compiled in order to help keep you as a CATA member informed on many different subjects. Please take the time to read through this information so that if you have any questions or concerns you can notify your CATA board of directors. I have a number of items that I would like to share with you. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Larry Willock and Bob Tim who have served on the CATA board of directors for the past three and six years respectively. As you are aware we just completed an election process and both gentlemen vacated their board positions at the close of the annual business meeting on May 19th. Their dedication, hard work and desire to help mold the CATA into what it is today is greatly appreciated. Thank you again for all of the hard work you have done in the past years. I would like to welcome Lisa Lear (Vice-President) and Carrie Haugen (At-Large Member) to the board of directors, I look forward to working with the both of you. Congratulations to Margaret Hunt who was re-elected to her position of Secretary. Additionally, I would like to thank Robert Ryan and his committee members. Without your expertise our election process would not have gone so smoothly. Thank you. Thank you to all of our membership that attended the annual meeting held May 18-19,2002 at Regis University. The staff at Regis was most hospitable and they helped to make it a great success. We will begin to discuss a site and topics for the annual meeting in May 2003. If you have any specific topics that you would be interested in having presented please let us know. At the CATA meeting we discussed legislative issues. The membership that attended has asked that a new survey regarding the current viewpoints of the CATA membership be developed. The board of directors is in the process of developing these questions so that they may be placed on the web page. Additionally, a communication committee was developed in hope that they may help increase the responses to the survey. Please do not be surprised if you are contacted by a fellow CATA member and asked to visit the web page and complete the survey. Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated so that the CATA board of directors can hear your opinion regarding legislative issues in the state of Colorado. If you move or your contact information has changed please visit the NATA, NATABOC and CATA web pages to update that information. The RMATA annual meeting was held in March and I would like to bring to your attention an item that will affect you in the next year. There will be a $10.00 dues increase in the upcoming 2003 membership year. The increase will be divided in half and $5.00 will go to the district and the remaining $5.00 will come to the CATA and will be put into a special fund for legislative issues. This money will continue to be accrued until the CATA membership decides that it is time for legislative action to take place. Have a great summer. Sincerely, Kelli Sheehan CATA President Vice President Report on Annual Meeting On the 18th and 19th of May 2002, the friendly
confines of the Science building on the campus of Regis University in Denver
Colorado, was host to the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association State Business
Meeting and Educational Symposium. The
largest number of state members in recent history participated, which made the
usual problem of having the appropriate number present for a quorum to conduct
CATA business, not a concern. Approximately
133 attendees participated in the two day 10 CEU program.
Speaker topics were varied this year and ranged in topic from
"Adolescent Pediatrics Injuries" to the latest and greatest in
"Light Therapy". Even
though PowerPoint presentations are defiantly the present state of the art in
audio-visual aids, the association was treated to a home video production of
"Protective Pad/Splinting use and manufacturing" by ATC Steve Rath and
Son. This being the final phase of a three year CEU reporting period probably
accounted for the increase in attendance, thus some new faces among the usual
participants. Good stories were
shared over breaks throughout the day, and even rumors of late night problem
solving discussions with ample libations circulated through the hall on Sunday
morning. Our greatest Treasure, our
comradery was present and new attendees we hope were
made to feel part of the CATA family. Once again during open discussions and aspects of the business meeting,
the Topic of "State Licensure" was run through the mill, with the
usual seasonal fervor, which members are challenged to keep going.
Insight on costs were presented, as well as, information on what other
District Seven States have achieved in securing legislation was shared.
Our initial problem to achieving licensure for Athletic Trainers beyond
our present Exemption was again recognized as being Financial as well as Public
and Legislative awareness of "Who Are ATC's and What do we do?".
Progress in public relations was evident by the display of the
Proclamation by Governor Owens declaring March 2002 as "Athletic Trainer
Month in Election results were shared with congratulations to the new Vice
President, Member at Large, and Secretary, as well as, a goodbye and plaque was
given to the outgoing Vice President and Member at Large.
Nominations from the floor were taken for new elections to be held early
next year for the offices of President and Member
at Large. Our association is well
and will be in good hands. In closing I personally would like to take this opportunity to Thanks the
Association members for the Privilege and Thanks. Larry

Vice President CATA At the 1999 Business Meeting the CATA members voted to stager the terms of office for the CATA Board of Directors as to allow for a smoother change over as board members leave office. Therefore, there will be elections in two consecutive years followed by a year without elections. The 2002 election has been completed and the results tabulated. Ballots were sent to 377 CATA members in good standing based on the February 2002 membership list provided by NATA. If you had not yet paid your NATA dues before the February membership list was generated you were listed as suspended and were not sent a ballot. There were 126 (33%) ballots returned, however, only 108 (29%) were valid (membership and certification numbers on envelope). Although the percentage of returns was lower than expected, they did exceed the 1999 election returns. Lisa Lear was elected to the Vice-President position over Chris Brunger and Paul Troyer. Margaret Hunt defeated Gregg Harper to retain her position as Secretary, and Carrie Haugen was elected to the At-Large position by defeating Pat Hoxsey. Voting for the offices of President and the second At-Large position will take place during the 2003 elections. The nominees for the 2003 election are for President: Wayne Barger, Chris Mathewson and Gregg Sheehan, and for the At-Large position: Mark Adams, Dominic DiManna, Kelly Lambeth, Chris Nagelhout. Ballots with candidate biographies will again be sent to members in good standing in early April 2003. Ballots will need to be returned (with membership and certification numbers on the envelope) by April 30th, 2003 to be considered valid. The Election Committee would like to thank all of the candidates who participated in the 2002 election and those nominated for the 2003 election for their desire to support the CATA. Public Relations Committee Report For those of you who attended the annual CATA business meeting, this will
summarize what you heard about the public relations past activities and future
plans. For those of you who may have missed the meeting, the following
will get you caught up. The past school year was a busy and productive time for public relations in Colorado. One of the biggest accomplishments that we achieved this year was to get Governor Bill Owens to declare March as National Athletic Trainers month in Colorado. We received a nice certificate verifying the event. Valerie Rich, ATC, also got the Mayor of Vail, Ludwig Kurz, to declare March as National Athletic Trainers month in Vail. The committee also made positive strides with the Colorado High School
Activities Association. The Association included an ad in the high school
state Wrestling program, and made public service announcements at state playoff
games. Various radio and television stations also aired public service
announcements during sports broadcasts throughout the state. Last year we
distributed promotional items to various people. Since we found this to This year we tackled a new adventure that was suggested at last years annual symposium, getting involved with the Channel 9 Health Fairs around the state. We participated in three of these health fairs this year and hope to be involved in even more next year. This involved ATC's setting up a table at the health fair and distributing items promoting and explaining our profession. We also answered questions relating to sports injuries. A special thanks to Tod McKercher, Heather Thompson, Rachel Arron, and Mike Goeglein for their help in making this a success. I was also informed at this years CATA meeting that many athletic trainers
had been doing other events at their particular job setting. Many school
newspapers did articles about their athletic trainer and the student athletic
trainer program. Other athletic trainers got involved in Bob Tim Communication Committee Report NEW COMMITTEE FOR C. A. T. A In response to the discussion that occurred at the C. A. T. A. Business Meeting, this past May, a Communications Committee was formed in an attempt to inform all C. A. T. A. members about the benefits of becoming actively involved in our state association. Dominic Di Manna, MS, ATC of Regis Jesuit High School has been named Chairman. He will be assisted by committee members, Kristin Bradley, Ami Gallivan, Liz Guy, Carrie Haugen, Nicole K. Markis, Allen Merrill, Darryl Miller, Chris Nagelhout, Robert Ryan, Toni Sampson Gwyneth Short and David K. Whitelock A member of the Communications Committee will be personally contacting those individuals currently listed as members of the C. A. T. A. and asking them to become familiar with our website and the materials it contains. Individuals will also be asked to check the website on a regular basis and to actively participate in the association by replying to surveys, attending symposiums, and to communicate concerns directly to the Board of Directors. The Communications Committee welcomes the support of all athletic trainers in Colorado. Please contact Dominic at 303- 697-1401, or on the web, barkley1963@yahoo.com. with any suggestions, questions or concerns. Jim Conboy Memorial Scholarship: Janine Pleau: Janine is a senior at Fort Lewis College. Janine came across the profession late in her academic career. Since deciding to pursue athletic training, she has demonstrated perseverance, dedication, and drive that the Jim Conboy Memorial scholarship is known for. Congratulations Janine! Dan Libera Memorial Scholarship: Amanda Gibbens: Amanda is a graduate from Rangeview high school with a 3.7 GPA. While at Rangeview she has recorded over 600+ hours in the training room as well as pages of additional extra curricular activities. Amanda has been accepted to UNC and hopes to make a difference in the athletic training profession. Congratulations Amanda! Each year we award two $500 scholarships to both a high school senior attending a Colorado college or University and to a college student currently enrolled in a program. The purpose of these scholarships to assist student financially and to promote athletic training as a profession. Over the last few years the number of entries have begun to decrease. I would like to challenge all athletic trainers that work with students to encourage them all to apply. The application is easily accessible on the web site, and the deadline is April 1st every year. Wendy Mathewson, MSPT, ATC Scholarship committee report CATA Continued Presence on the World Wide Web Across the world the internet continues to grow in popularity as a means of communication to millions and even billions of people. It has been said that over one million websites are added to the internet every month. The CATA Executive Board is quite aware of the internet’s popularity and is actively seeking new ways to improve our current website. Over 16,000 people have visited the CATA website in the past three years. It is my hope that we will continue to increase our visits, by both our membership and people just “visiting”. For visitors I have made introductory information about athletic training readily available and am constantly being asked for more. I have also supplied a link to EVERY district and state athletic training association as well as many related associations. When surveyed regarding the quality of our site, people are always happy with the content and availability of the information. Often times they remark that they are very impressed with the “return” on their questions, whether by me or an executive board member. While I would like to increase our exposure to people outside athletic training the CATA website is, FIRST and FOREMOST a communication tool for our members. Many useful features/services are available on our site:
Based on some of the suggestions and requirements from the 2002 Annual Members Meeting and Clinical Symposium some changes will be made to the website in the weeks and months to come:
The CATA is YOUR association and the website is YOUR website if you feel any changes need to be made or would like to suggest any changes or additions please feel free to contact me.
