Letter from the President

Dear CATA Member,

I sincerely hope that everyone has had a healthy and successful fall. There are a few things that I would like to bring you up to date on.

The Board of Directors has set two goals for the upcoming year. The first, is to work hard through a public relations effort to increase the general public’s knowledge regarding the field of athletic training. Bob Tim has taken on this challenge and has done an outstanding job in the initial stage. Additionally, the Board of Directors is in the process of planning the annual meeting. Due to hosting the district meeting last March we did not have our annual meeting. As soon as plans are finalized we will be sending out information and registration materials.

If you have moved within the last year and have not changed your address with the CATA please access the web site and change your address on line. If you do not have Internet access please contact Margaret Hunt. This will enable us to have a complete listing of our members so that any mailings that are sent out reach you.

Once again, if anyone has any questions, or concerns please feel free to contact myself or any one of the board members.

Sincerely,

Kelli Lotito

CATA President

CATA Public Relations

The CATA's executive board has made public relations a priority this year since we are not pursuing any legislative action at this time. The National Athletic Trainers Association has also made public relations a priority. It has created an arsenal of materials to be used on the national level and on the state level. The CATA's plan is to take advantage of these materials, and the resources we have, to launch our own attack at making the public more aware of our profession in Colorado.

The CATA has created a 3 step process to begin our attack. Step one is already in progress. We have distributed Public Service Announcements (PSA) produced by the NATA to numerous television and radio stations. Lisa Tice (Longmont), Chris Mathewson (Denver), Keith Townsend (Pueblo), Kelli Lotito (Durango), and myself in Colorado Springs, have made contacts with the stations in our areas. The stations agreed to air these PSA's during high school football games and any special sports telecasts. They began doing this in October and intend to continue through the playoffs and possibly into the basketball season.

Step two involves all of the ATC's in Colorado. We are the best form of public relations that we have. Our presence at games and practices have made many parents and fans aware of who we are and what we do. We would now like to take it to the next level. A public relations packet produced by the NATA has been sent out to many of you. This packet includes a variety of materials and ideas which we can all use in our respected areas. I have asked each of the people who received a packet to choose at least one idea to implement at their workplace. If you did not receive a packet and would like one, please contact me and I will see that you get one.

Step three will take place in February and March. The NATA has declared March "National
Athletic Trainers Month". They have given us many ideas that we can choose from to participate in the event. The CATA is in the process of deciding which of these ideas will work best for us. We will keep you informed as decisions are made.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to share with us please do so by contacting me. The best form of public relations is ourselves. Although most athletic trainers don't like to call attention to themselves, this is an opportunity to call attention to our profession. Please help us to make this a successful process. The rewards will be never ending when we no longer have to justify our existence in our various work environments.

CATA Annual Members Meeting and Clinical Symposium 2001

The annual CATA clinical symposium will be held May 19 and 20th at Regis University in Denver. Topics and speakers are in development at this time. At the CATA business meeting, which will be held during the lunch break of the second day, many important topics will be covered.

According to the CATA constitution, nominations for officers.....may be submitted in writing prior to, or received from the floor during, the annual business meeting of the CATA for the year prior to the year of completion of the current term of office of the persons holding office.
The office of vice pres., sec. and one at-large position will be up for election in 2002. Therefore we need to get the nominations in 2001.

In addition to his effort with the election committee, Robert Ryan has been working on some proposed changes to the current CATA constitution. His proposed changes will be presented at length in the next newsletter so they can be reviewed prior to the business meeting in May. At that time the proposed amendments will be reviewed and discussed and if the membership deems appropriate, voted on for approval.

Please mark you calendars for this years meeting. In March you should receive an entire information packet which will include symposium topics and schedule, hotel information, and registration materials

CATA Newsletters on the World Wide Web

Recently the past issues of the CATA Newsletters have been added to the association’s web page. This task was completed with the hope that it would make our newsletters an even more valuable form of communication of news and events for our members.

Placing past issues of our newsletter on the world-wide web makes them available to anyone who might be interested in the athletic training news and activities in Colorado. Significant effort has been made to make the association’s web page a valuable tool and asset to the members. Log on and check it out at www.prolynx.com/cata

CATA Scholarship News

It’s that time of year again where high school and college students are applying for scholarships. The CATA is sponsoring two $500 scholarships available for students attending a Colorado College or University with the desire to pursue athletic training as a profession.

The Dan Libera Memorial scholarship is available to a High school student who is going to attend a Colorado College or university. This scholarship is dedicated to Dan Libera, one of Colorado’s great athletic training educators.

The Jim Conboy Memorial Scholarship is available to a college student within the state of Colorado. This scholarship is dedicated to Jim Conboy, the first athletic trainer in district seven inducted into the NATA hall of fame.

Please be looking in your school mailboxes for scholarship information packets, which will include information about the scholarships, qualifications and application requirements. The deadline to apply for both scholarships is April 1st, 2001. Every high school and University will get a packet by the 1st of Feb. Or you can pull updated information on the web site at www.prolynx.com/cata.

We encourage all athletic trainers to be an advocate for their students and direct any interested students to the web site.
