Inside this Issue…

    Letter from the President

    Dear CATA Member,

Hopefully your spring has begun on a good note and that the year 2001 is going well.

The CATA board of directors are gearing up for the annual meeting which will be held May 19-20th at Regis University in Denver. The topics and presenters will offer a good variety this year and I hope that we will see you there in May.

This should be an exciting meeting since we did not host one last year, due to the district meeting being held in Colorado Springs. There are many items up for discussion at our business meeting (Sunday) so I hope you will attend. Additionally, we will be awarding the CATA scholarships to our winners. If you have any students who are interested in a scholarship please encourage them to apply. The applications can be found on the web page.

Bob Tim has been extremely busy in his public relations effort in regards to athletic training. He has been working hard to help promote athletic training month. If you have any questions please contact him.

Please utilize the CATA web page for any job postings, CEU opportunities (Colorado) and any other pertinent information for certified athletic trainers in Colorado. Chris Mathewson has made it very easy to post announcements, or to change your address.

Once again I hope to see you at the state meeting in May.

    Sincerely,

    Kelli Lotito

    CATA President

CATA Website Services

Recently the associations website surpassed 10,000 visits to the site since its inception just over three years ago. Ten thousand visits is exciting , but the CATA executive board would like to encourage its members to use OUR website more often. Many efforts are being made to provide a useful website to our members.

A campaign will soon be started to advertise the website to high school, colleges and clinics to use the FREE job listing services. During the months of April, May and June, when most athletic trainers are looking for a new position, (especially new graduates) the website averages 50 visits a day to the job posting page. The personnel managers and athletic directors who have used the site in the past have always been very pleased with the exposure and the candidates who applied for their position.

An announcement page was started on the website to be used by ANYONE who has information that would be beneficial or interesting to our members. Announcements for internships, notices of meetings and/or continuing educational opportunities have been posted FREE of charge. People who have posted notices have been pleased with the result.

Check out our web page at www.prolynx.com/cata it has a great deal of useful information, and services. Let us know what you think, or would like to see on the website.

Public Relations in Full Swing

Bob Tim, Member at Large & Public Relations Committee Chairman

The CATA has been busy working on various activities to promote National Athletic Training month. As you all know, the NATA has declared March as National Athletic Training month.  This is an attempt to educate and promote our profession among the many people who do not understand what we do.

The CATA has already implemented a number of activities during the school year, including; having public service announcements aired by radio and television stations during high school football and basketball games, mailing public relations packets to athletic trainers, and speaking with the media in an attempt to have stories written about our work.  More recently we have sent a proclamation letter to Gov. Bill Owens in an attempt to have him proclaim March as National Athletic Training month in Colorado.   (we are waiting for a reply)

In February we purchased shirts with the National Athletic Training month logo on them and distributed them to many of the ATC's working the state wrestling and basketball tournaments. In March we purchased pens and note pads with the same logo on them and distributed them to colleges and clinics in an attempt to spread the word.   Unfortunately, not everyone has received these items due to cost limitations.   Keep in mind that this is only the first phase of our public relations push.   We are hoping to get more people involved in the next phase.  We will discuss ideas and game plans at our CATA conference in May.  We hope to have many of you involved. For more information or questions contact Bob Tim.

Proposed Changes in the CATA Constitution and By-Laws

Robert Ryan, MA, ATC, CSCS

It is the duty of the governing body of any organization to routinely review and update the documents of that organization. With recent changes in the NATA and RMATA structure, growth of the CATA membership, and changes in the accepted governing practices for an organization such as ours, it is time to evaluate and revise the current CATA Constitution and By-Laws.

The current CATA Constitution and By-Laws are very similar to the old RMATA Constitution and By-Laws that were revised in 1998. After reviewing the governing documents from several state and district Athletic Training organizations, as well as those of other similar organizations, several minor changes and a few major changes are being proposed.

With-in the next 2-3 weeks you will be receiving a copy of the current CATA Constitution and By-Laws with the proposed changes and an explanation of justification for these changes. These changes will be discussed and hopefully voted on during the Annual Business Meeting to be held in conjunction with the Annual Symposium on May 19th and 20th. The proposed changes may be accepted as a whole if there is no objections, or, changes to individual Articles of the By-Laws may be approved or denied separately. Please review the proposed changes and plan to attend the Annual Business Meeting. Attendance of a minimum of 20 percent of the Certified members in good standing will be needed to constitute a quorum for conducting business.
