Letter From the President

Dear CATA Member,

The board of directors would like to express our gratitude to all of the volunteers and attendees of the RMATA annual meeting in March at the Sheraton Colorado Springs. The event was a great success -- thanks to your help and participation.

I would like to offer my congratulations to Larry Willock who was inducted into the RMATA Hall of Fame during the district business meeting. Additionally, I would like to congratulate Kelly Kirven on her appointment as the Colorado student representative to the RMSATA board of directors.

The annual business meeting was held Sat., March 25 and our discussion regarding legislation and the various options available was very informative. Thank you to everyone who attended and who voiced their opinions, as well as those absentees who called in their ideas to the board members. The legislative action group met in May, and based on the guidance of the membership, the group has placed a hold on any legislative efforts until a majority of the membership feels that it is appropriate to move forward.

Additionally, if anyone is interested in becoming active on a committee at the district level, please contact me. The district is in the process of exploring the possibility of delivering the RMATA newsletter electronically. Those who would prefer to receive the newsletter electronically should access the web site (www.rmata.org) and identify themselves to Matt Webber (district secretary). If you wish to continue to receive the newsletter via mail, you do not need to take any action.

Have a wonderful summer, and enjoy the Colorado outdoors!

Sincerely,

Kelli Lotito

CATA President

Larry Willock Inducted into RMATA Hall of Fame

This past March in Colorado Springs, at the 2000 Annual Business Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association Larry Willock, Head Athletic Trainer of the United States Air Force Academy, was inducted into the RMATA District 7 Hall of Fame.

Larry came to the field of athletic training as many have, he was an athlete in high school but realized that college athletics required "more game" than he had. He says his favorite thing about being an athletic trainer is working with athletes. They want to get better and athletic trainers get to share in their recovery and eventually return to performing at high levels.

Larry became a certified athletic trainer in 1971, he was among the first 17 to take the test. He has spent his entire employment career in District 7. His first job was the assistant athletic trainer at the University of New Mexico in July of 1968 where he spent 27 years. He has since spent the last 6 years at the Air Force Academy.

Larry is the father of two daughters. His oldest Vanessa, is a lawyer by trade, and works as the University of New Mexico. Heather, his youngest, is the mother of his two grandsons, Tyler age 7 and Jared age 1 and a half.

Larry says that his favorite work memory revolve around cold rainy evenings at three-a-day practices talking with student trainers and trying to tell them, that they were crazy to get into this profession. Larry feels that his relationships developed with former students, now colleagues, are the greatest treasure next to his family that he possesses. He also says that the hard work and long hours are all worth it when a former athlete comes back to say "thanks" after they have been gone for many years.

When asked what advice he would offer to young ATC’s just entering the profession Larry said, "Do it because you care, do not look at the hours, but have faith that in your life times, we will work reasonable hours and get paid for the job we do. But it will be up to the young athletic trainers to get us there, we are only as short ways up the mountain we will climb to be recognized and compensated for our labor. We need to keep smiling, work hard, and inside have faith in knowing it will come to pass."

Larry relates that his career has been privileged by the fact that he has worked with two pioneers in our field of athletic training. His first, and longest, is L.F. "Tow" Diehm, at the University of New Mexico, and Mr. Jim Conboy at the United States Air Force Academy. He says he has twice had big shoes to fill, but because they filled them so well, they are easy and comfortable to fit, for they walked so many long miles on our behalf, and all I have to do is to try and stay in step.

The executive boards of the Rocky Mountain and Colorado Athletic Trainers Association, as well as athletic trainers, athletes, and anyone who has had the good fortune to work with Larry Willock over the past 30+ years would like to congratulate Larry on the accomplishment. Next time you see Larry, take a look at his shoes, because one day some one will be saying just how large they are to fill. Congratulations Larry on a well-deserved honor.

CATA to Upgrade Web-Page

The CATA executive board recently agreed to upgrade the association’s website. In the near future modifications will be made to the sight to include a CATA members bulletin board and CATA online newsletters.

The bulletin board will allow members to post notices, free-of-charge. The notices can include information that any member would wish to pass along to other CATA members, birth announcements, death announcements, retirement notices, change of address notices, equipment for sale or trade notices, wanted equipment, etc. All notices will run for as long as the author requests and will be published on the web site exactly as they are received. The only thing we would ask is that each notice be kept brief and be relevant to CATA members.

Also new to the web site this late summer/early fall will be the past and present editions of the CATA newsletter. Every article of each edition will be available for viewing and/or printing. It is the hope of the executive board that having the newsletters available on the web will allow members who have moved, or for whatever reason are not receiving their newsletters, keep up to date with CATA news. The information will also be available to anyone who just might be out "surfing" the web, and would be interested in athletic training news in Colorado.

In addition to the new upgrades to the web-page, the sight will still continue to offer it’s current features:

  • Introduction to the CATA Page

  • Introduction to Athletic Training Page

  • Student Athletic Training Information Page

  • Athletic Training Legislation Information Page

  • Upcoming Events Page

  • Placement Page, &

  • Address Change Page

By far the most used page of the CATA website is the job posting feature. Many Colorado schools and sports medicine clinics have used this FREE service to fill athletic training positions that they might have open. Managers who have used the service ALL reported that they were happy with the return of qualified candidates. It is not uncommon for the placement page to register 30 visits a day in May, June and July.

Another popular feature is the upcoming events page. This page is designed to post notices of ANY event that serves athletic trainers. Many clinics and educational services use the site as extra advertising for their event. This, just as any service, on the web page is FREE and intended for the use and benefit of ALL CATA members.

The web page is a service that the executive board deems very important and they are very interested to see what the members think of the current web page effort. Please make a point to check out the changes to the web page in the near future. We hope you enjoy it, and find the site useful.
