Letter from the President

Dear CATA Members,

I hope that everyone is having a prosperous new year. There are several items that I would like to take this opportunity to update you on.

Mark your calendars for the RMATA annual meeting March 19-21, 1999 in Casper, Wyoming. Also, plan on attending the CATA annual meeting May 1-2, 1999 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. We had such a great turnout and lots of fun there last year that we decided to go back to Colorado Springs. You should be receiving information on both the RMATA and CATA meetings in the upcoming months.

Also, in the next month check out the new and improved web page. We have had some difficulty in the past with keeping the web page updated and current. Our thanks to Chris Mathewson who has volunteered to take on the responsibility of maintaining the web site. I know that he has new ideas and improvements planned for the site.

I hope that you will plan on attending the annual meeting in May, and I look foreword to seeing you there.

Sincerely,

Kelli Lotito

President

Election Update

Our current executive board officers three year terms are due to end this May . At last years annual members meeting in Colorado Springs Robert Ryan agreed to chair the election committee. He has spent a significant amount of time accepting officer nominations, and researching candidates eligibility to hold office.

In March a special issue of the CATA newsletter will be published with relevant information about the nominated candidates. It will also contain the specific instructions on how to vote and return your ballot to Robert Ryan, who will tabulate the results.

Winners will be announced at the annual business meeting in Colorado Springs this May. The new executive board members will then take office following the meeting.

The CATA executive board would like to take this opportunity to thank Robert Ryan, for his hard work and assistance with the election process.

Letter from the Editor

This is my second attempt at writing and editing the CATA newsletter. I hope you enjoyed the first. I did not hear anything to the contrary, so I assume that no news is good news.

The CATA executive board would like to encourage open communication between the members. If there is anything that you would like to see or not see in future editions please let me know. I hope you enjoy this issue.

CATA on the World Wide Web

Check it out... the Colorado Athletic Trainers’ Association is on the world wide web. A new and improved CATA web-page will make it’s debut on February 13th. The site will have the following features/pages:

    • Introduction to the CATA

    • Introduction to athletic training

    • Educational opportunities

    • Upcoming events

    • Newsletter (current and previous issues)

    • Student athletic trainer information

    • Job Opportunities

    • Other athletic training links

The executive board has made a dedicated effort to produce our web-page and make it something that is useful and beneficial to every athletic trainer in Colorado. They would like it to be used distribute information (job opportunities, upcoming events, special issues, etc.). General information regarding athletic training will also be available for anyone who might be interested.

Another goal of the executive board is to make the web page interactive and timely. Special design feature will be used to gather what people viewing the web-page would like to see in the future, or their opinion about the quality of information available. Also every attempt will be made to update the information regularly.

The world wide web is growing at an exponential rate, hundred of thousand of sites are being added everyday. Millions of people use it daily for entertainment, to buy and sell goods, research a topic of interest, and communicate.

The CATA, through consistent leadership, has developed a presence on the web. Log-on and let us know what you think. We would love to hear your opinion, good, bad or indifferent. The web-page is intended first and foremost for the CATA members, it is important to shape it towards your needs and wants.

Upcoming Events

Mark your calendars!!!

This spring and summer will offer many different educational event for athletic trainers. Some events will be held locally and some very close by.

Saturday, May 1st and Sunday, May 2nd will be the annual CATA members meeting and educational symposium. Bob Tim, Mike Moore and the executive board have been working very diligently to organize an educational event that will appeal to all athletic trainers. In the most recent organizational meeting CATA secretary Rick Hendricks commented that this is definitely the farthest along in planning the conference that they have been since he has been on the executive board. Both Bob and Mike are hoping to avoid any of the eleventh hour changes, that often times affect the quality of the conference.

Preliminary topics that will be discussed will include:

    • Conservative treatment of Patella-Femoral Dysfunction- A new and innovative approach

    • Surgical Intervention of Patella-Femoral Problems

    • Low Back Pain/Injuries and the Athlete

    • ACL Hamstring - Vs - Patellar Tendon Grafts

    • Risk Management for the Athletic Trainer

    • Diagnostic Imaging of the Shoulder

    • Treating the Dislocated Shoulder

    • Licensure Pros and Cons for the Certified Athletic Trainer

    • Gait Analysis Lab

    • Shoulder Exam Algorithm Lab

    • Orthotics Lab

The Fourth Annul Colorado Student Athletic Trainer Conference will be Sunday May 2nd also at Arnold Hall at the Air Force Academy. It was a tremendous success last year holding it in conjunction with the annual members meeting. It made planning logistics for the student athletic trainer committee a great deal easier. Many members commented that they car-pooled with their students to the conference.

This years format will be identical to last year’s of lecture and concurrent laboratory sessions. Over 95% of the student opinion surveys reported that they preferred that type of learning environment. Preliminary topics that will be covered will be:

    • Anatomy introduction and evaluation of athletic injuries to the skull, spine and abdomen.

    • Anatomy introduction and evaluation of athletic injuries to the upper extremity.

    • Anatomy introduction and evaluation of athletic injuries to the lower extremity.

    • Introduction to therapeutic exercise and modalities.

Both conferences will once again be held at Arnold Hall at the Air Force Academy. The entire Academy contingent were exceptionally helpful last year, their assistance allowed the CATA to have the most successful annual members meeting and student athletic trainer conference. A special issue of the CATA newsletter will be published around the first of March. It will contain specific registration information regarding both conferences, so keep an eye on your mailbox!

The District 7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association annual members meeting will be held in Casper, Wyoming this March. The topics they are discussing for presentation sound very exciting. It would be very nice to have a large Colorado presence!

The RMATA annual conference will make its return to Colorado in 2000! The board of directors signed a contractual agreement to hold the meeting in Colorado Springs in March of 2000.

The annual National Athletic Trainers Association annual meeting will be held the 16-19th of June in Kansas City, Missouri. It will be the 50th anniversary of the first NATA annual meeting. Make your plans now, it should be quiet a celebration and something every athletic trainer should want to be a part of.

NATABOC Examination Requirements

Shannon Courtney & Lisa Tice

This is to inform you of the upcoming changes that are presently occurring with the NATABOC examination process. In order to be an examiner/model for the 1999 exams all certified athletic trainers must complete the Examiner Training Program. This program includes the following:

    1. Request and complete the home study workbook and exam. (no cost)

    2. Attend 1/2 day workshop.

    3. Pass the exam at the end of the workshop.

Those who successfully complete the examiner training program will be allowed to serve as an examiner/model for the 1999 exams.

The home study material can be obtained through the NATA web site (www.nataboc.org) or by calling 1-877-937-3262. The latest certification update out December ‘98 will also have information on the Examiner Training Program.

Lisa and I have tentatively set a date of February 21st for the first 1/2 day workshop, from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at a site to be announced. This will depend on the number of ATC’s that have completed the home study workbook and exam. Since we have a test scheduled for April, it is imperative that we get working on this now. Our is that all of you, who have served as examiner and models in the past, will be able to attend the first 1/2 day workshop and we can continue to offer the exam.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact either Lisa or myself, the NATABOC will also be able to answer your questions.

Thank you for your continued help in the certification process.
