President's Letter

Dear CATA Members,

My thanks to all of you who attended the annual CATA meeting held at the United States Air Force Academy this May in Colorado Springs. I enjoyed meeting many of you face to face and greatly appreciated hearing your comments and suggestions for future conferences.

This spring during our CATA election, several board members stepped down after completing their three-year terms. Thanks to their contributions over the years, the CATA has experienced great success. At the same time we welcomed several new board members to fill the positions vacated by the aforementioned members. We would like to officially welcome them to the board and extend our gratitude for volunteering their time to help the CATA and its members. At the annual meeting, CATA members approved the proposal to stagger board members' terms so that the board will continually have a consistent number of experienced members serving the needs of the CATA.

Additionally, we are very excited to hose the 2000 District 7 meeting in March in Colorado Springs. My gratitude to those of you who volunteered to help make this meeting a success. Your time and contributions are greatly appreciated.

If any of you have completed your CEU requirements for the reporting year of 1997-1999, please be sure to send in your reporting sheet as soon as possible. The Board of Certification has made this request in an effort to reduce the number of errors that are made by the temporary staff that they employ near the end of the reporting period.

Lastly, I wanted to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Chopper Travaglini. During the past few years, we have lost three members who have been instrumental in the athletic training industry. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you who were fortunate enough to have known Chopper.

Web Page Has 3000 Hits

Since the release of the "new and improved" CATA website on February 15, 1999 we have registered just over 3000 visits.
It is the hope of the CATA executive board that the website will be a useful means of communication for all CATA members. They have made every effort to provide up to date information to anyone who might visit the website.
Informal surveys of visitors to the website have been very positive most report that the site is laid out well, and information is current and easy to find among the pages. Others have reported that they appreciate the effort that the CATA is making to make information available to anyone who might be interested.
Currently the website has pages on the following topics:
* Introduction to the CATA
* Introduction to Athletic Training
* Corporate Sponsors
* Upcoming Events
* Student Topics
* Educational Opportunities
* Placement Opportunities
* Athletic Training Links
In the future the CATA hopes to expand the web-page to include: current and previous issues of the members newsletter available; CATA members bulletin board; CATA members chat groups regarding specific topics. They are also hoping to publish member surveys on the web, which possibly might improve member feedback.
If you have not, visit the site at www.prolynx.com/cata. The CATA would like to have 10,000 visits by the end of the year. (10K by Y2K)!!! If you have any questions, comments or concerns regarding the CATA web page please contact Chris Mathewson at CAMATC@Prodigy.net.

CATA Corporate Sponsor Program

Recently the CATA executive board launched a new corporate sponsor program. At the beginning of the year sports medicine and athletic training companies both locally and nationally were asked if they were interested in supporting the CATA.

During the development process of the program the executive board wanted to see that the program would benefit both parties. The money raised through the sponsorship fees would pay for the printing and postage of the quarterly members newsletters, and anything left over would be applied toward the Jim Conboy and Dan Liberia memorial scholarships. In return the sponsors would be able to place business card size advertisements in each newsletter, have a link on our web page to their corporate page, and have a booth at the annual members meeting.

We are glad to announce that 13 companies agreed to sponsor the CATA:
* Centennial Sales; Paul DiNapoli
* CORE; Jim Biskner
* Excel/Aquajogger
* Helm Surgical; Tom Bugbee
* Hely Webber/Body Glove; Dennis Howard
* Micro Bio Medics; Jeff Nelson
* Ortho Support; Rick Russo
* Orthopedic Solutions; Gary Gillis
* Professional Products; Rory Riddoch
* Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic
* Today's Therapy; Amy Smith
* Trauma Recovery Systems; Tom Ray
* 21st Century Wellness; Richard Rogers
Please support these individuals and their companies.

1999 Conference

In May the CATA held it's annual members meeting and clinical symposium at the Air Force Academy. The conference was a great success. Despite a late season snow storm attendance was very high.

Reviewing the conference evaluation forms it appears that those who attended thought very highly of the symposium. Only one out of the eight ranked categories scored, on average, any lower that an excellent.

Attendees felt the strengths of the meeting were the: low cost; risk management and licensure presentations; excellent well-qualified speakers; and the wide variety of topics for presentations. Overall the attendees rated the conference as excellent.

Since the district 7 annual meeting will be held in Colorado Springs next fall there will be no CATA state clinical symposium. But plans are already in the works for the following year.

The CATA executive board would like to acknowledge and publicly thank both Mike Moore and Bob Tim for their hard work and dedication. This year's conference would not have been considered excellent by those who attended if it were not for Bob and Mike. Thank you.

Upcoming Newsletter

The next issue of the CATA newsletter will be devoted almost entirely to the topic of athletic trainer licensure in the state of Colorado.

The newsletter will contain articles on: the apparent benefits and drawbacks of athletic training licensure; a report from Rick Ball, an independent consultant the CATA contracted with to examine the need and the possibility of licensure in Colorado; and details on a state-wide survey the CATA executive board will be performing to poll the members on their feelings toward licensure.

Watch your mailboxes around September. This is a very important topic that affects all athletic trainers, regardless of professional setting, across the state of Colorado.
