Fall 1998 Newsletter In this Issue...
CATA Members, I hope that you had a wonderful summer, and that you are having a productive and successful fall season. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome those athletic trainers who are new to our state. The board of directors has been busy during the last couple of months. We have started planning the annual meeting, which will be held in May and we are excited about our preliminary plans. I have had a few people contact me regarding the legislative committee. The board of directors has decided to hold off on appointing a chairperson. We are in the process of gathering additional information regarding legislation in Colorado and would like to discuss the topic with you at our annual meeting. If you are interested in being involved with the CATA, please contact a board member, or if you have any questions or comments, please contact us. Sincerely, Kelli Lotito President Colorado Student Athletic Trainers Association Hello CATA Members! I am pleased to inform you that the Colorado Student Athletic Trainers Association has been founded among the universities around the state. We held an informal meeting at the annual CATA meeting this year to determine the amount of interest for this association. The interest was abundant and involved students from Fort Lewis College, Adams State College, Colorado College, University of Colorado - Boulder and Springs, Colorado State University, and University of Northern Colorado. At this meeting, we discussed potential activities, such as: newsletter, web-site, NATA exam preparation, and athletic training camps for high schools. As well, we agreed that each school should have its own representative on the CSATA board; this deadline was set for July 1, 1998. The certified advisor for the association was selected to be Susan McGowen from Adams State College. Ten out of the seventeen colleges and universities in Colorado sent in representatives by the July 1st deadline. These representatives include: Dan Baker (ASC), Rebecca Robinson (CC), Ginger Wallace (FLC), Rachael Aron (Mesa), Danele Conway (Metro), Alexis McClain (CU-Boulder), Jeni Van Tongeren (CU-Springs), Melanie Keller (DU), Jaclyn Adams (UNC), and Karey Raymond (WSC). Any schools not yet represented are more than welcome to send in the name of a school representative so that they may become involved. Once the CSATA Proposal passed through the CATA board, suggestions were made to select additional board members and to include Kelli Lotito, CATA President, as a certified advisor. The last official meeting was held in Colorado Springs on July 25, 1998. Schools present were: UNC, Mesa, DU, WSC, and FLC. Discussion for the need of a hierarchy resulted in a consensus stating that I shall be named president. The schools that were not in attendance had the opportunity to object this decision, but no conflicts or concerns have been presented. The concern for the position of a treasurer was also presented. In recent letters to the school representatives, I have expressed this concern and the need for any additional board members students feel are necessary. I requested nominations be sent to me so that a ballot can be made and sent back to the schools for student voting. Unfortunately, I have had no response to any of my requests. As soon as I receive nominations or requests to obtain a certain position, mail-in ballots will be sent out in order to determine a complete board. Each school representative will have his/her own responsibility, as well some representatives will alo be responsible for the position of President, Treasurer, etc. The CSATA goals and main projects for this first year are to include: establishing a web-site and newsletter, obtaining sponsorship and donations, planning an athletic training symposium for Colorado high schools, and planning activities at the CATA Annual Symposium. We have representatives working on the web-site, which will hopefully be finished shortly. The first CSATA newsletter will be sent to each Colorado university/college and CSATA sponsor as soon as student representatives turn in their necessary information for completion of the newsletter. Additional issues will be sent approximately every three months, or less if special or important information needs to be presented. As mentioned in our goals, we are planning an Athletic Training Symposium for Colorado high schools (coaches and students). We are hoping that this will take place in Denver in the early part of May. We are looking for sponsors and speakers, anyone interested in helping please contact me or any of the other student representatives. For the CATA Annual Symposium, we are planning to hold a raffle and possibly to sell t-shirts. As well, we hope to help Chris Mathewson with the high school portion of the symposium. The CSATA will hold its annual meeting during the same time as the CATA business meeting. This will be our main meeting of the year, but we hope to have meetings throughout the year to better our communication on certain projects. E-mail will be our main mode of communication, once all addresses are submitted. If anyone has any questions, concerns, comments, or would like more information please contact me. (All CSATA student representatives: please contact me as soon as possible.) Sincerely, Jaclyn M. Adams CSATA President/UNC Representative by Robert Ryan Head Athletic Trainer Mesa State College Nominations are being accepted for the positions of CATA president, vise president , secretary and two at-large representatives. Nominations can be sent to Robert Ryan (Election Committee Chair) or to any of the current board members prior to the December 1st deadline. To be eligible for any position on the executive board the potential candidate must meet both of the following criteria. 1) NATA certified member for a period of not less than five (5) years immediately prior to their nomination, and 2) have resided and practiced professionally within the State of Colorado for a period of not less than two (2) years immediately prior to their nomination. The same person may be elected to not more than two (2) successive terms of the same office. (All current board members are in their first term so this will not not prevent the re-nomination of any of the current board for their current position.) Individuals can accept the nomination to one (1) office only. After the nominations have been received the election committee will notify the potential candidates and verify their eligibility and their acceptance of the nomination. A brief biography will be assembled for each candidate and will be distributed to the membership with the written ballots and a majority vote will determine each position. The terms of office will begin at the next annual business meeting. On October 21, 1998 Colorado lost one of it most well known and well-liked athletic trainers. Jim Conboy, PT, ATC, died in Penrose Hospital, he was 74. Conboy had been the United States Air Force Academy head athletic trainer for 43 years. In fact, Conboy had been with the school ever since it opened its doors in 1955 at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. Conboy, born July 31, 1924, had worked over 450 USAF football games, and missed only a few basketball games. Conboy has a variety of significant professional achievements. He served as an athletic trainer for the 1976 U.S. Pan American Games in Minnesota and Winnipeg. In 1980 he was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame. He felt that the Hall of Fame award was very special honor to be included with some of the most unselfish and hard-working people he knew. In 1990, Conboy was honored with the Pioneer Award from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association, because he was the first athletic trainer in District Seven to be inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame. The CATA has honored Jim by awarding a yearly scholarship in his name to a deserving student athletic trainer. The NATA News (January 1997) quoted Jim as saying "The greatest reward of the athletic training profession is the satisfaction obtained from being part of the team and doing your part to help young people utilize their God given talent to perform together." The CATA will miss Jim, and we would like to wish his family the best in this hard time. |
