National Athletic Training Month

This was a very successful year for the Public Relations Committee.  We
continue to increase the number of events that we are involved with that
promote our profession.

The following is a list of events that happened around Colorado during the month of March.

*Received a Proclamation from Governor Bill Owens declaring March as
National Athletic Training month.  This is the fourth consecutive year
that we have received the proclamation.

*Received a Proclamation from Mark Ruzzin, Mayor of Boulder Colorado (center).  Shown here being accepted by Shannon Aberton, ATC (left) and Michael Keating, ATC (right).

*Jim Gillen, head athletic trainer for the Denver Nuggets, presented 4

high schools with the Excellence in High School Athletic Training award. Chris Mathewson,
Ponderosa High School, and Bob Tim, Widefield High School were the first place winners.  Both schools received $2,000 for their athletic training room.  Kevin Margarucci, Lewis Palmer High School, and Tom Bradley, Highlands Ranch High School, were runner ups.  Each of those schools received $500. The awards were given out just prior to tip off of the Denver Nuggets home game on March 20th.

The student athletic trainersfrom Ponderosa and Widefield received free tickets to the game. This is the second year that Jim Gillen has given this award.  Pictures and an article regarding the award can be seen on the Denver Nugget’s web site.

An article was also in the Denver Post regarding the awards.

*T-shirt toss - This year we initiated a t-shirt toss where athletic
trainers threw out t-shirts while a public service announcement was being read at basketball games.  The t-shirts displayed the NATA’s logo for National Athletic Training Month.  Shirts were thrown out at Thunderridge High School, Fountain
Fort Carson High School, Widefield High School, the Air Force Academy and the Denver Nuggets games.

*Channel 9 Health Fairs - The Colorado Athletic Trainers Association and
Channel 9 Health Fairs began a partnership. Athletic trainers will assist
with nine health fairs throughout
Colorado by measuring skin folds, in
return, the athletic trainers will be able to educate the public about our
profession.  Water bottles and pens displaying the National Athletic
Training month logo will be distributed.  The Colorado Athletic Trainers
association will also receive free advertising with all of Channel 9
Health Fair’s advertising.

*Pens and notepads were distributed to clinics and physicians offices
displaying the National Athletic Training month logo and the Colorado
Athletic Trainer’s logo and web site.

*An article was written in the Colorado Springs Gazette newspaper
describing a day in the athletic training room with PJ Gardner, athletic
trainer at Liberty
High School.

*An interview was done by channel 5/30 television station with Bob Tim,
athletic trainer at
Widefield High School.  It aired during the morning
show and gave tips to athletes and parents about ways to prevent injuries.

Thank you to everyone who participated in any of these events.  I'm sure there are more things that happened that we are unaware of, keep up the good work.

March 3, 2004

With National Athletic Training month quickly approaching, the public relations committee has been hard at work.  We have various activities in the planning  stages, including: Governors proclamation, high school athletic training awards given by the Nuggets and Avalanche, Public Service Announcements to be aired on television and radio, possible athletic trainer’s nights at the Colorado College Tigers hockey game and Colorado Springs Sky Sox game, informational booths at Health Fairs, and involvement with the Colorado High School Activities Association.

As always, we are asking that all athletic trainers take an active role in promoting National Athletic Training month.  The January issue of the NATA News discusses many ideas and events that anyone can host in their part of the state.  If your school or facility is hosting a Channel 9 Health Fair, we would encourage you to get involved and set up an area to hand out informational material that the NATA has available.  If you have connections with a television or radio station that would be interested in playing a public service announcement, contact me to receive the necessary information.  Many of you have done a wonderful job in the past and we are looking to have even more athletic trainers  getting involved this year.  If you have questions or need help, you can contact any of the members of the public relations committee, they are: Bob Tim, Shaun Carmody, John Salvatore, Kevin Margarucci, PJ Gardner and Joe Fine.

March 19, 2002

Governor Bill Owens signed an Honorary Proclamation declaring March as National Athletic Training Month in Colorado.  The proclamation can be seen on the CATA web site.

The Colorado High School Activities Association has placed an advertisement for National Athletic Training month in the state wrestling and basketball programs along with making public service announcements during the competitions.

A press release has been given to the media explaining National Athletic Training Month and that Governor Owens has signed a proclamation.

A few schools and clinics are doing individual activities to commemorate March as National Athletic Training month.  Some are doing this by recognizing the athletic trainers at events and having athletic trainers present at parent's night and new student orientation.

Objectives

*Inform the public of the educational and training requirements necessary to become a certified athletic trainer

*Inform the public of the six major tasks an athletic trainer is qualified to perform:
1. prevention of athletic injuries and illness
2. evaluation and recognition of athletic injuries and illness
3. first aid and emergency care
4. rehabilitation of athletic injuries
5. organization of  facilities and personnel
6. counseling and education of athletes

*Inform the public of the services which certified athletic trainers provide at the professional, collegiate, high school, clinical and
industrial work settings.

Outcome

The committees proposed outcome is to gain an appreciation from the public, school administrators, coaches, team owners, patients, athletes and other medical professionals in order to create a healthy understanding and working relationship among all parties.

Activities Completed in 2002

*Proclamation from Governor Owens declaring March as National Athletic Training Month in Colorado.

*Proclamation from the Mayor of Vail declaring March as National Athletic Training Month in Vail, Colorado.  (Thanks to Valerie Rich)

*Participated in the Channel 9 Health Fairs in three cities.  Tod McKercher in Denver, Mike Goeglian in Highland Ranch, and Heather Thompson, Rachel Aron,  Bob Tim in Colorado Springs.  These people set up booths at which they answered questions, handed out material pertaining to the Athletic Training profession, and gave out promotional items such as water bottles, pens and notepads.

*Had announcements made at games, and advertisements placed in the high school state wrestling and basketball tournaments programs.

*Individual ATC's were involved in parent' s night and Freshman orientation at their schools.  Also a couple schools published articles in their school newspaper regarding the athletic trainer and their program.

*Had Public Service Announcements made during radio and television broadcasts of sporting events.

*Distributed promotional items (pens, notepads, magnets and water bottles) to athletic trainers, athletic directors, and other influential people in the sporting world.

Activities Completed in 2001:

1. Public Service Announcements have been broadcasted by television and radio stations during high school football and basketball games this past school year, 2000-2001.   These announcements, produced by the NATA, were broadcasted in Longmont, Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Durango.

2. Public Relations Packets were sent to ATC's throughout Colorado. These packets, created by the NATA, included suggestions on how to promote the athletic training profession at individual work sites.

3. A letter was sent to all high school athletic directors explaining National Athletic Training Month.  A suggestion was made for athletic directors to recognize the ATC at their individual school.  If their school does not employ an ATC, they were directed to log on the CATA or NATA web site for information pertaining to athletic trainers.

4. Shirts displaying the National Athletic Training month logo were distributed to athletic trainers who worked the state high school wrestling and basketball tournaments. Public Service Announcements were also read over the public address system during these events.

5. Pens and note pads displaying the National Athletic Training month logo were sent to colleges and clinics to use in their facilities to promote National Athletic Training month.

6. Marcia Neville, from News 4 in Denver, produced a story featuring Darryl Miller on Tuesday March 27, 2001.  The special report discussed National Athletic Training month along with all the special things that ATC's, such as Darryl, do for athletes.

7. The Denver Post published an article, Thursday March 29, 2001, entitled "Trainers' pay rarely equals importance".  It included interviews with three athletic trainers and three athletic directors.

8.  The Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic declared Thursday March 15, 2001 as Certified Athletic Trainer Day.  All ATC's wore the athletic training month shirt they received from the CATA, and throughout the day they discussed the value of a certified athletic trainer.  Pictured below are the ATC's of the Steadman Hawkins Denver Clinic.   From left to right, Chris Mathewson, Rusty Green, Kristin Horgan, Jason McWilliams, Mike Allen, & Dennis Martin.

2. To educate the organizers of sports camps and club sports tournaments as to the necessary requirements needed to employ an ATC, (insurance, salary, supplies).

3. Other ideas and suggestions will be discussed at the annual CATA symposium May 18 & 19, 2002.
